Caring for your toddler: How to buy baby products
Buying essentials for a baby requires utmost precision and care. First and foremost, clothing is the most vital necessity. In this regard, parents must look to buy products that are comfortable for the baby, and are safe in the sense that there are no pointed edges or similar 'arrangements', so to speak, built in the piece of clothing. Most babies hate clothes that need to be pulled overhead, as their skull often gets stuck. Hence, garments that are easy to wear and take off, like tops that are front opening via buttons or a zipper, or have the side-snap mechanism. Another important feature is fast access to the diaper area, and hence snap-open leggings are the best, although another option could be the ones with a loose elastic waist. These days, Velcro is also a popular choice as it is fast and simple.
Coming to the comfort part, the seams inside the piece of clothing need to be checked. All of them should be smooth, and must not stick out at any part. Clothes that have tight elasticized bands on the waist, arms, neck or legs must be avoided, as they can obstruct the flow of blood, and also irritate the baby's skin. Similarly, clothing with unpainted metal zippers and buttons or snaps that are not firmly stitched and can easily come off are not the right choice. The fabric is also a key element in the comfort factor. Generally, cotton knit garments can shrink by up to 10 percent after a few rounds of washing. Polyester and cotton blends are more economical to buy compared to pure cotton, and are also more wrinkle proof. Since babies grow quickly, one must be prepared to buy new clothing after every 8-10 months.
Toys are clearly another very important product that needs to be purchased for babies. Categorising it according to the age group, children up to 3 months of age enjoy toys in different shapes and colours, as they have just begun interacting with the world around them. Toys that have high contrast patterns, as well as rattles and musical cribs mobiles having objects or patterns are the right choice. However, due precaution must be taken in the sense that these toys must be suspended from the crib, and should not have any sharp edges or parts that can be detached.
For babies in the age group of 4-8 months, textured soft toys, soft balls with sound, and toys with flaps and lids that can be opened and closed are ideal, as the child has just begun being a little bit familiar with his/her surroundings.
When the baby is in the 9-12 months age bracket, he/she will begin experimenting with toys, shaking and dropping them, searching for hidden objects, poking their finger into holes, and may even start walking in some cases. This is the correct age to give them more advanced toys like building blocks, that will help in their mental development as well. Soft dolls and puppets are also recommended.
