Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (Xbox 360) $1.99 The longer the franchise goes on, Konami still doesn't need to shout out loud and long about a new version of Pro Evolution Soccer. Console footy fans know that for all the bells and whistles and 'look at me' bluster accompanied by the other major soccer game from the other major player in football video games, Konami always comes up with the goods without a shed-load of advertising. 2006's offering is no exception: different enough from its predecessors to warrant more than a cursory glance, yet essentially the formula we've come to know and love. Madly. PES6 for the 360 is a beauty, as Sky Sports smug Scots co-commentator Andy Gray would exclaim. Of course the game looks much better on the 360 than it does on a 20th century console (hello PS2!) but Pro Evolution has always been about gameplay and 6 has it all. This time around, the shooting system has been refined. Players are able to take a pop at goal more instinctively than last time out, and volleys and half-volleys have had a re-vamp too. Feints, backwards dribbling and retaining possession after a slide tackle are also new features for 2006. Things can get more physical in PES6, with defenders closing down attackers much more in evidence, defensive blocking (legal or illegal) and clever new turns for the more highly rated players in the game. These things take time to learn, but it's a great deal of fun getting there. Pro Evolution Soccer may be the supreme playing experience as far as football's concerned, but there has always been a section of fans dismayed at the series' lack of authentic club and player names. PES6 has its share of misnomers (for Reading, read Berkshire Blues as an example) but hey! There's an edit facility if you feel that way inclined. There again, new licensed (i.e. authentic) game content includes kits and squads for the Czech, French, Australian, English, Italian, Argentinian, Spanish and Swedish national sides. The top French league has also been added, along with big club sides from Europe including Benfica, Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos. We're sure we've told you this before when referring to Konami's football games, but the beautiful game just got a whole lot better. You lucky people! |

Of course, the list of licensed club teams has also been appended, with Newcastle United, RSC Anderlecht, HJK Helsinki, IFK Goteborg, Panathinaikos, Spartak Moscow, Fenerbahce, NK Dinamo Zagreb, FC Basel and the 'manager-less at the time of release' Tottenham Hotspur amongst those added to those you can choose or choose to conquer. Featuring all the major European cup competitions, with emphasis on the Champions League, the game also features the old favourites such as Master League and 'Become a Legend'. These aspects provide two ways into the PES football experience firstly from a team management point of view, and then via individual skills. Master League sees you manage off the pitch a squad and backroom staff from lowly beginnings all the way to league and cup triumph. As well as coaching (alongside your hired team trainers) your squad in skills and general fitness, you have to formulate strategies, keep players happy, scout around for new talent while off-loading less able (or less willing!) players. All of this occurs via an intuitive interface. And, of course, you also have to be able to control your team on the pitch using the new animations, moves, expressions and even shots and dribbling techniques. 'Be a Legend' sees you as an individual player (designed in look and feel by you) who has to make his way from the lower leagues by performing on the pitch. While the emphasis remains tipped in favour of action over nerdy stats, the game still offers enough organisational and management elements to keep the purist soccer fan happy. Developed by the Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka and his team in Tokyo, Japan, PES 2012 has had a major overhaul to its artificial intelligence systems this time around. This means that in single-player and online multiplayer, not only will the gamer’s virtual team-mates behave more like real-life pro footballers, so will the opposition’s. Basically, simply and intelligently in situations such as through-balls, one-on-ones and pressing play, virtual teammates and opposition will react more rapidly and less erratically to the player with the ball. This also offers opportunities for more intricate and effective passing as well as supported dummies when attempting to draw defenders, for example. Also improved in PES 2012 are Zonal marking and positional defending – defending players are more fluid in their abilities to recognise gaps and possible overlap attacks for example, and will move to support colleagues against different attacking formations. In fact, a brand new cursor switching system that uses the right analogue stick to switch to any player on the field has been introduced this time around to enable gamers to select a team-mate anywhere on the pitch fast enough to be readily available in a fluidly developing situation. This also enables gamers to create more intricate set-pieces including free kicks and throw-ins as well as letting teams break rapidly and use space rather than just the ball more efficiently. Footy, however, is also about physical opposition as player battles with player for ball and position (in entirely legal tussles of course). Nintendo has done it again. 3DS its new handheld console, besides the three dimensions, adding sufficiently attractive to repeat past successes like the Wii or Game Boy with their legendary Pokemon. "There is another console, the console that starts a new era of entertainment: the 3D," he said yesterday in Amsterdam Satoru Shibata, president of Nintendo in the continent.
