Xbox 360 Self Repair - Should You Try It?
You're in the middle of a Grand Theft Auto game and everything freezes up. You notice three lights flashing red on the front of the console. You switch the power off and on a few times and you realize that there will be no easy fix for this problem.
You've got a number of choices to make. You can send your Xbox back to Microsoft and have it repaired free of charge provided that your warranty is still good. If you don't have a valid warranty anymore, you have to pay as much as $150 for the repair.
You can also do the repair job on your own but is this the right thing to do? The answer depends on several factors:
1.) Do you have a valid warranty and is it wise to make use of it?
This is most definitely a critical decision. It's nice to let the experts handle the problem and have it repaired without any sweat on your part.
But many people have had to wait several weeks before receiving their console only to find out that the repair was temporary. You may get a refurbished console that used to belong to someone else! You don't know what sort of abuse the console has been subjected to.
2.) Do you have any problems about working with tools or using your hands to repair a problem?
It's very common for people to have never worked on their bicycle when they were kids. If you have a familiarity with basic tools such as a socket wrench, a knife, screw driver, etc. then you're qualified to fix your Xbox yourself.
If you've never picked up and used these basic tools, then you shouldn't attempt to repair your console. When doing your own repair be very careful.
3.) How good is your information source?
How do you know for certain that the kid on Youtube is an expert? Remember he's a kid who messes around inside the console. Is there a follow up video about whether or not the problem returned?
