Gears of War (Xbox 360)

Gears of War (Xbox 360)

$9.99

Monsters? Check. Burly hero with a chequered past? Check. Highly-detailed destructible landscape? Check. Big guns with chainsaw bayonets? Ohhh yesss! Gears of War came out of E3 2006 as one of the most talked about new releases for any next-gen console. A mix of survival horror and combat-based gameplay, Gears of War is set in a wartorn future where mankind is caught in an epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a race of gun-toting nasties that have emerged from the bowels of the planet. And horribly nasty they are too, as they take the concept of ugly to an all-new hyperreal level. You play as Marcus Fenix, a disgraced war-hero who's spent several years languishing in prison. As things start to get out of hand in the outside world, the prisoners get a pardon and you take Marcus and his squad through an apocalyptic wasteland under a barrage of heavy fire. As you make your way through the game, it's a case of duck and cover if you want to survive: too long in the open and you will die, quickly and horribly (with some truly impressive gore effects). Rapid firing on its own just ain't going to cut it. You need to work with your team (who are either controlled by AI in single-player mode or other gamers in multi-player) to outwit your opponents, and it's this element that takes you beyond the realm of the traditional shoot-em-up. The ultimate extension of this is the eight-player deathmatch, which pits two teams of four against each other in what's essentially a 'last man standing' battle. This is helped along by the voice recognition available to players that goes along with the voice chat facility enabling you to discuss tactics. Gears of War has been described as the gaming equivalent of a Hollywood blockbuster. Well, we always figured you could take your kid brother to see the latest big film at the local multiplex, but we recommend that you should expose him to Gears of War only if he does something really reprehensible and deserves to grow up horribly damaged. However, this does promise to be an incredibly immersive story-driven monster of a game for more mature types, and it's going to make the hundreds you shelled out on your 360 worth every last penny.

Too Human (Xbox 360)

Too Human (Xbox 360)

$4.99

Too Human is the 2008 offering from Silicon Knights, the developer behind Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. It twins Norse mythology with cyberpunk in an epic tale of discovery. Players take on the role of Baldur, one of the Aesir, who has taken it upon himself to protect and aid humanity in an ongoing war against the machines. So it is that you embark on an action RPG quest to fight the bad stuff and rescue humanity. Silicon Knights has come up with an innovative new control scheme that uses the right analogue stick for controlling your character's direction and, rather than using the left one for camera control, uses it for deploying weapons, much as you would expect for the likes of Geometry Wars. Too Human is bound to tickle the fancy of loot collectors - there's tons of the stuff, scattered everywhere you look. Similarly, there are oodles of customisation options to get your guy looking and playing just the way you want. Also on offer is online two-player co-op. Even Gods get lonely, you know. It just goes to show that sometimes they're all Too Human. Step into the world of Too Human, the next-generation third-person epic action game from renowned Canadian developer Silicon Knights. As the cybernetic god Baldur, you are thrust into the midst of an ongoing battle that threatens the existence of mankind. An ancient machine presence has forced the god's hand. In the first part of a trilogy, Baldur is charged with defending humanity from an onslaught of monstrous war machines bent on the eradication of human life.In Too Human, players are treated to a nonstop barrage of action powered by the seamless integration of melee and ranged firearms combat and fueled by breathtaking visuals enabled by the powerful combination of Xbox 360 and the Unreal Engine 3. Battles unfold in awesome scale as players engage with vast numbers of enemies. Gamers take it to the next level by playing the entire single-player campaign in multiplayer co-op mode via Xbox LIVE or system link.

Blazing Angels: Squadrons of World War II (Xbox 360)

Blazing Angels: Squadrons of World War II (Xbox 360)

$12.99

Blazing Angels is an arcade-style flight sim set in World War II, and enables players to jump right into air combat action, and work their way up from being a rookie through to an ace squadron leader. The game enables players to experience the most gripping and famous battles of WWII through the eyes of a squadron commander and ace fighter pilot. From the battle for England, the attack on Pearl Harbor, to the bombing of Berlin, your pilot skills will create WWII history. Whether it's the invasion of the Philippines, the fierce fighting for the deserts of North Africa, or the battle of Britain, the player and his squadron are tasked with turning the tide of war. The player's objective is to conquer the skies of Western Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific and bring his squadron back alive. The game features innovative squadron-based gameplay, with AI-controlled wingmen obeying the player's commands. Plus, as the pilot's skills improve, so will the skills of his squadron. The pilot's heroism and leadership skills also grow during the course of the campaign as players fly with their squadron and try to evolve together into an ace fighting force. Pilots can choose from a range of 40 authentic WWII aircraft including the famous P-51 Mustang, the P-38 Lightning, the B-17 Flying Fortress, the Luftwaffe's Messerschmitt, the Supermarine Spitfire and the Japanese Zero. From the wing rivets to the nose art and the detailed cockpits, these planes are just like the real thing. Players guide their squadrons through 20 heart-stopping missions, beginning as untrained recruits and evolving through battle experience into ace combat pilots. The game's authentic WWII atmosphere allows players to get in close to Germany's industrial terrain for a bombing raid, strafe the islands of the pacific, or emerge from the cloud cover over London and engage the enemy. The learning curve of the game is also very easy - this is a pick up and play arcade-style flight sim, not one which needs a phone book-sized manual and a month to learn. Players can also experience Blazing Angels on Xbox Live with up to 19 other players online, engaging in either head-to-head dogfights or in cooperative team play.
