FaceBreaker (PS3) $4.99 From the same folks that brought us the much-admired Fight Night Round 3 comes a boxing game that takes itself a little less seriously in the (mis) shape of FaceBreaker. It's a ludicrously violent game, but it's all done in such a cartoon-ish way that surely no one could possibly be offended, could they? The spirit of the arcade boxing game lives on in this 'one-two' of a title from Electronic Arts' new Freestyle sub-label, surely with a view to lure in non-boxing fans. Brief exposure to FaceBreaker should do the trick. It looks like a lot of fun, and whaddya know? It is! As we mentioned, the game doesn't take itself too seriously, and that's reflected in the minimal number of options and modes. Win conditions consist of the three knockdowns rule, who suffers least damage after three rounds, Sudden Death and FaceBreaker, in which you get to keep the head of your opponent if you are victorious. Lovely! There are plenty of amusing characters to choose from with their own strengths, weaknesses, unusual behaviour and signature moves. All in all, FaceBreaker provides a lot of laughs while giving you something to get your teeth into AND that essential 'one more go' feeling. It's a knockout! |

SEGA Rally (PS3) $10.95 The long-awaited next-gen appearance of Sega Rally is here, and it's definitely been worth the wait. The whole package of sound and vision does not disappoint, even on a non-HDTV, and Sega fans of an offroad bent (we know there are plenty of you out there) will lap up every mud-spattered, dust-blown moment. There is the usual selection of race modes available in the PS3 and 360 versions of Sega Rally: Quick Race is where you simply choose a car and track and get into the action in an instant; Championship enables you to race against others in an attempt to win three separate rally championships. You start in the Premier Championship with a small selection of cars and attempt to accumulate sufficient points by winning races to open up the next championship; Time Attack is where you cover as much distance as possible against the clock as the only car on the circuit. You can select any car and track combination, post a record distance covered in the time provided on the Leaderboards and compete against a ghost car for a further challenge. And finally there is the multiplayer option, where you can race friends in the same room, or head online to race players from around the world. Both the PS3 and 360 versions enable up to six players to compete online. |

Borderlands (PS3) $15.95 Borderlands is a futuristic science fiction first person shooter with role playing elements from Gearbox Software, who previously created the Brothers in Arms series of games. The game seeks to move FPS games on from the evolutionary cul-de-sac some people believe them to currently inhabit. Borderlands is set on Pandora, a planet at the edge of the galaxy where colonists have been drawn by the expectation of vast mineral wealth. However, when the planet turns out to be barren, the rich leave, and the poor are abandoned to chaos and lawlessness: a futuristic wild frontier like the American old west. The remaining settlers elect to try to find and exploit abandoned alien technology as their route to getting off this forsaken planet. Pandora's vicious indigenous life-forms decide that the settlers look like an appealing snack. In this hostile and dangerous environment, you play as a mercenary treasure hunter. And here the RPG elements of the game come into play - to establish the trust of the locals, you have to undertake missions to win their favour. These may be collecting or hunting missions.... and while this aspect of the game is similar to role playing games, the focus is very much on real time 3D action. The game continues in this vein: there is a main story to progress through, but there are side missions that can be followed at any time to help you gain items and experience. Experience enables players to level up, RPG style - so the game has no difficulty levels, instead featuring a scalable challenge system. If a particular battle is too tough for you, back track, complete some side-quests and then try again with improved abilities and equipment. When it comes to equipment, Borderlands has another surprise up its sleeve - a truly phenomenal amount of different weapons. A weapons "manufacturing" engine uses a randomise feature to create truly mind numbing numbers of combinations - over 600,000 different weapons, including handguns, machine guns and sniper rifles. But also with alien technology, plasma rifles and rocket launchers too. Players will always be able to search out bigger, badder and better weapons. And to avoid screeds of stats to tell you what a weapon does - they are colour coded to give you an at-a-glance idea of their capabilities. Just as the weapons of Borderlands are randomised, so is the terrain. Main locations such as towns are fixed, but the landscape between them is generated just for the game you are playing. Borderlands also has a multi-player co-operative mode, in which, any experience earned by completing missions is shared between team members equally, because everyone's skills will be required to successfully complete a mission. |
