Determined to get to the bottom of it all, off he trots to drill down through all the mystery and get to The Truth. When you're War, however, it's not about asking questions and putting the clues together, it's about messing people up with your Great Big Sword. It's about hack-'n'-slash brawling, exploration and puzzling. The action plays out largely as a mixture of brawling and light platforming. Players overcome all manner of undead, demony monsters, and they have quite an arsenal to do it with. For example, you've got chains that might look familiar if you've played God of War. These can be used to not just take out enemies, but to manipulate the environment. There's also the X Blabe, a typically-massive tool that, once thrown, will return to you. It can also pick up environmental effects such as flames. You get the idea. Also up for grabs is an ever-growing array of abilities, such as some ethereal wings that can be used for gliding – helpful for exploration and platforming – and the blade geyser which sees (great big!) pointy things shooting from the ground around War. The operative sneaks around in disguise and gathers intel on things like enemy positions and where land mines are lurking. If you've played Team Fortress you've got an idea of how it works. Rather than being pinned to a class for the duration of Brink - or even for a single mission - you can chop and change throughout the course of the game at command, health and supply posts. Splash Damage has built what it's calling the SMART (Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain) System into the game. To most of us, that means you can pull off free-running moves across elements of the environment by simply running at them with the left bumper button held down. Brink isn't really separated into single- and multi-player components – at least not in the way most of us are used to. The campaign can be played either on your lonesome with the help of bots or with other humans online. Beyond the fact that humans and bots might behave a bit differently, gameplay won't be altered a jot one way or the other. And, frankly, Splash Damage has done a convincing job of making the AI behave like human players. Brink is a decidedly 'core' game for experienced FPS places. Poor old Alex has been the subject to human testing, as a lethal virus spreads throughout the country and turns the nation into a bunch of strange zombie creatures. As a result, he hungers for blood like the rest of the horde, but has somehow maintained his own conscience and free will. The game aims to piece together Alex’s forgotten past and the events that led to the experimentation. Ultimately, he’s seeking revenge on whoever made him into the monster that he is today. Not that it’s any bad thing for the player, as you get to play with all the cool new moves and abilities Alex has gained since his time under the knife. The game has you running from one location in the city to another, using different ‘forms’ to tackle various types of enemies. Facing some cops that are trying to stop him from progressing, Alex’s arms will turn into huge black claws, which can then be used in combat to shred the enemy to pieces. Later on you'll get to use boulder-type hands to knock out huge tanks and large scythe-limbs to take on the zombified horde itself, with the abilities continuing to come in thick and fast. Getting around New York is a breeze as well. [PROTOTYPE] seems to want to give you a realistic world in the style of Grand Theft Auto IV, populated with NPC citizens and a working police force, with a character that can systematically break all of the rules. It’s a great escape from reality when you feel like the most powerful guy in the world, wreaking havoc on citizens and evil zombies alike. There’s another element to [PROTOTYPE] that gets introduced as you progress through the initial chapters, and it’s the classic ‘disguise’. In grabbing people and performing a specific move to consume them, you basically absorb their identity in a Shang Tsung stylee. This adds to the roster of disguises you can use to evade capture from the SWAT teams and conspirators that are out to take you in and assumedly slam a bullet in your head. [PROTOTYPE] seems to have the hallmarks of one of those summer blockbuster popcorn flicks; an enigmatic lead, a twisted plotline, awesome and devastating powers and the sense of exhilaration you get from bouncing over cars and running up council flats. |

Not far into the mission, however, he gets exposed to the weapon and finds himself with a metal-like arm. A bladed disc grows out of his arm, and lo and behold, you have the glaive. The glaive can do all sorts of wonderful things. As well as being thrown for a spot of decapitation, it can be used for things like stealing fire, ice and electricity and then hurling them at your opponents. As you progress through the game, the number of abilities the glaive gives you will keep on trundling upwards. As you'd expect from any shooter in the age of the wonderful Interweb, Dark Sector comes complete with a multiplayer mode, supported either online or over LAN. |
