Red Steel 2 (Wii) $9.99 What a difference a few years can make. While the first Red Steel peaked gamers interest as a Wii launch title, some argued that the actual control system was lacking. Several years on, however, the series is back with several years of Wii development experience and Nintendo's MotionPlus accessory behind it. While Red Steel 2 follows its predecessor in terms of gameplay style, it features a whole new, unrelated plot that takes place in an unrelated game world. Where the previous title took you to modern-day Tokyo on a quest to rescue your fiance, this game takes place in a fictional Western setting riddled with elements of Eastern culture and centres around a burning need for revenge. You take on the role of an unnamed Swordsman, who's one of the last surviving members of the Kusagari-clan. Most of his fellow clansmen were murdered by a rival group called the Jackals, and so you must find their leader, Payne, and take retribution. Off you trot, sword in one hand, gun in the other... Ubisoft has been referring to Red Steel 2 as a 'first person adventure'. While shooting your foes is certainly an option, the publisher says you could feasibly complete the game without firing off a single shot. There's plenty of ledge-hopping, ladder-climbing, switch-flicking and, of course, sword swinging to keep you busy. With the use of MotionPlus (the game won't work without it) Ubisoft has upped the accuracy of the mapping between your real-life movements and your on-screen sword slashes meaning that, short of getting yourself a real blade, you'll never come closer to wielding a katana! |

Red Steel (Wii) $4.99 In the Wii's march towards conquest of that ever-elusive casual games market, it's nice to see we true gamers haven't been forgotten. Red Steel is another Wii exclusive offering from Ubisoft aimed at the old faithful that slips through the Wii launch window. The game puts you in the thick of the Tokyo underworld with a sword in one hand, a gun in the other, making use of the Wii's unique control system to stretch the possibilities of the action/beat-em-up genre. Your fiancé, the daughter of a prominent Yakuza boss, has been kidnapped by the competition during their attempt to steal the Katana-giri. Naturally the task of getting her back falls to you. Armed with the above named sword (a symbol of leadership in Japan) you must travel from LA to Tokyo to get her back. Thus begins your quest through the Japanese underworld and the road towards becoming a modern-day samurai. And it doesn't come much more modern-day than using cutting edge firearms to accompany your katana. Rather than trying to create an ultra-realistic Japanese mafia game, Ubisoft uses a little bit of creative license to maximise the fun and playability. Players will find themselves very much on the outside of the culture, learning the traditions of Japan and witnessing the bizarre juxtaposition of old and new for the first time with the character. Eventually, however, you'll want to have placed yourself nice and comfortably within the Yakuza to form alliances to help you get back the little lady. The action makes full use of the Wii controller, and you should be more than a little excited at the proposition of having a crack at some good old-fashioned motion sensor sword play. Expect a nice blend of two-fisted samurai sword fighting and gun-toting mayhem. |
