Taking your Wii Further - Making a Softmod for wii Work for You
A Softmod for wii essentially involves modifying your console by using software. It is actually very simple to do, requiring basic things such as a computer, an SD card, and a card reader (for reading the SD card).
Early beginnings
The first known means of getting an unsigned code to load on a Wii is called the Twilight Hack. The name comes from the game The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as the exploit that allowed for unofficial homebrew software to run on SD cards was found in the game. Since no hardware modifications were done, this was the first instance of a softmod for wii.
Since the Twilight Hack was based off a game, it required that the game loads so it can run the exploit, thus running the unsigned code so you can run a homebrew application. However, newer applications have been developed to give you a shortcut on softmod for wii: install a custom Wii menu channel so that homebrews can be run using the Wii menu. This way, the Twilight Hack does not need to be run every time a homebrew is to be used.
The Twilight Hack only works for System Menu versions 4.0 and above. If your Wii has the most recent versions of the System Menu up to 4.2, you should use the bannerbomb exploit. If you have the version 4.3 and above, use the Indiana Pwns or Smash Stack exploits instead. All these exploits, like the Twilight Hack, will run on SD cards. However, you have to be sure to check your SD card if it is compatible. You can check if your SD card is compatible online.
The homebrew channel
The Homebrew Channel is one such channel in the Wii menu that allows you to load and use homebrews without running the Twilight Hack. Once installed, it will function like any other Wii menu channel and can also be deleted through the Data Management menu. It will not however shop up in the play logs.
Updates
When you've got your homebrews in place, watch out for updates released by the console manufacturer since these are intended to affect a softmod for wii so it can't be used. While it pays to be careful, homebrew developers will have been 10 steps ahead of you developing counter-measures for said updates. In many instances though, console updates do not affect homebrew applications.
Some terms
· Unsigned Code - an application that does not have the required secret key designed by console manufacturers for a game to load
· Exploit - part of a software that takes advantage of bugs or glitches to cause unintended results to occur
· Homebrew - any software that has not been authorized by the console manufacturer
Implications
Since a softmod for wii allows you to override your console's security structure, it has been associated heavily with videogame piracy. That is why the homebrew community discourages using "softmod" as a term for referring to Wii homebrew. The homebrew community exists to develop and promote third-party applications for the Wii, and not to simply be a means of playing games for free. The best place to get a softmod for wii is below:
