Turok (Xbox 360) $9.99 An ex-member of Wolf Pack, the most ruthless Black Ops squad around, Joseph Turok is charged with capturing and detaining his former colleague and mentor Roland Kane from his fortress on a backwater planet. Trouble is, this planet has been genetically altered, and after Turok's ship is shot down on approaching the planet, he has to use every ounce of nous and bravery to evade the armies of highly-trained soldiers in the first place. The massive insects and myriad ravenous dinosaurs have to be dealt with too! Sure enough, Turok for 2008 comes with a single-player option dubbed Story Mode, but the game also boasts fantastic online multiplayer features with a selection of modes and maps for between 2 and 16 players. There are 10 multiplayer maps in all, including seven competitive maps and three cooperative-specific missions. Competitive multiplayer modes include Capture the Flag, Assault-style Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and War Games, a special objective-based game mode. Turok's co-op feature allows up to four players to team up online in maps inspired by the single-player story but designed specifically for the co-op mode. Unique to Turok, and like the game's single-player campaign, the multiplayer modes include dinosaurs and large insects, which may attack any player and can be lured to attack opponents. The game is powered by the much-admired Unreal Technology software, thus making it a first-person shooter with great pedigree and no little style. It may be light on the bad language, and not too bloody and gory, but there's plenty of ultraviolence on offer in Turok. If you harbour a dislike for dinosaurs, genuinely smart soldiers and huge insects, fall in line with 2008's Turok. |

Left 4 Dead 2(2009) (Xbox 360) $14.99 The zombies are back with a vengeance! The original Left 4 Dead was a cult success, and featured intense arcade-style gameplay. It's something that you'd expect from developers Valve, creators of Half-Life, Portal and Team Fortress. A sequel was inevitable, and the concept remains largely the same - control one of a group of four unfortunate souls as they travel across country to survive an undead horde. Why fix what's not broken, after all? Left 4 Dead 2 does have some new features and extras which make for a different zombie-bashing experience. Melee weapons are introduced here, with everything from pipes to chainsaws available to use on the living dead, and new weapons allow for some fresh butt-kicking to take place too. That's not to mean your life will be any easier. Set-pieces are more complex and interesting - one stage set in a fairground will involve you dashing through a rollercoaster track, smacking zombies along the way, to turn off an alarm on the other side of the park. Enemies themselves are more frequent, surprise you more often and are generally more difficult. Formidable foes such as Boomers and Witches, before only seen on occasion, can sometimes be found in twos among a horde of oncoming flesh-eaters. The player-creator is upgraded with whole new Digital Identity. This feature really makes you feel as if you are part of the action, serving ace after ace, or on centre court at Wimbledon with the pressure on. Characters are even more realistic and rich in detail due to HD technology. There is also a online feature which further adds to the gaming experience. With Digital Identity, you can create extremely realistic player models and customise them with many extra details (hairstyles, shirts, shorts and shoes, etc.). You can make a player your own with unique attributes and even different temperaments. All the Grand Slam events (Australia, U.S.A., French and Wimbledon) are available, as well as loads of other smaller tournaments in which you can perfect your back-hand. There is a whole host of top players (24 to be precise) available to choose from, team up with, or do battle against, such as Andy Roddick, Roger Federer, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova, to name but a few. The story mode is the Grand Slam mode. You are in control of your selected player from the beginning of his or her career, starting with training camps and junior championships to fully-fledged events. Eventually, you will guide them through all four Grand Slam tournaments. You are able to select the style of tennis you want your character to play. All in a day's work for an awesome ninja. We all know, however, that the point is really fast, bloody gameplay, and that's what we're set to get. The game - which follows up Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox back in 2004 - will feature a brand spanking new gameplay engine built from scratch by Team Ninja and developer Tomonobu Itagaki, creator of the Dead or Alive franchise. It also comes with a new auto-health regeneration system, a mechanic set to subtly shift the way you play. The biggie, however, is the new obliteration techniques. Nowadays, dismembering a foe isn't enough to stop them dead. The problem with that is that they'll attempt to suicide bomb you. This is why you'll want to use an obliteration technique - different weapons come with different moves - to wipe them off the face of the planet. Brink (Xbox 360) $12.99 Built by Enemy Territory: Quake Wars developer Splash Damage, Brink is a first-person shooter set on The Ark, a seaborne city existing in a post-apocalypse-y sort of a world in which water levels have risen and The Ark may be the last bastion of humanity. See, no ships have been seen for some 20 years and The Ark's bosses, convinced this factoid heralds the end of humanity beyond floating city limits, have stopped anyone leaving. That might be OK if The Ark wasn't massively over-populated, with the have-nots living in derelict slums and the haves living in posh splendour. This state of affairs breeds discontent, and revolution is in the air. A resistance movement is looking to break out of the city, while security forces attempt to keep humanity together on The Ark. You can play as one of four character classes as both security and the resistence. The soldier carries ammo to resupply teammates and, at appropriate points, blows stuff up. The medic heals his comrades and buffs (boosts) their health. The engineer repairs strategic assets, buffs allies' weapons and creates handy bits and pieces like machine gun turrets. The operative sneaks around in disguise and gathers intel on things like enemy positions and where land mines are lurking. If you've played Team Fortress you've got an idea of how it works. Rather than being pinned to a class for the duration of Brink - or even for a single mission - you can chop and change throughout the course of the game at command, health and supply posts. Splash Damage has built what it's calling the SMART (Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain) System into the game. To most of us, that means you can pull off free-running moves across elements of the environment by simply running at them with the left bumper button held down. Brink isn't really separated into single- and multi-player components – at least not in the way most of us are used to. The campaign can be played either on your lonesome with the help of bots or with other humans online. Beyond the fact that humans and bots might behave a bit differently, gameplay won't be altered a jot one way or the other. And, frankly, Splash Damage has done a convincing job of making the AI behave like human players. Brink is a decidedly 'core' game for experienced FPS places. If you fit that bill, you'll find a deep, strategy-laden game in Brink. |
