Eating various fruit will make Yoshi change colour and offer a new ability. Blue fruit will make him float up into the air, while red chillis will make Yoshi run at a breakneck pace. You're going to need these transformations and abilities to survive the mind-twisting designs of each stage. On top of this, there are two new suits for the hero to don; Cloud Mario and Rock Mario. The cloud suit lets you create up to three floating platforms for you to cross chasms with, while the Rock suit allows players to roll around hills and crash into enemies and obstacles to reveal new paths. Even the co-operative multiplayer mode has been enhanced – a friend will appear as a Luma character that can hold enemies and perform the Mario Spin to freeze and knock them out. Best reasons to buy Nintendo Wii in 2011
On the first day of the new year, HULIQ takes a look at the gaming prospects for the cheap wii controller in 2011.
It is easy to look at the slower hardware sales Nintendo saw in 2010 and dismiss the Wii as a "dying" platform, but there is no evidence to support that at this point. While the Wii has the lowest graphical power of the current-gen consoles, Nintendo has taken other steps to freshen the experience, such as integrating the Motion Plus accuracy enhancement into new versions of the Wii controller. Online play with the console is still a sore point that may see investment from the company in the coming year, though HULIQ sees this as unlikely to happen.
The main driver for Wii hardware and software sales has and will continue to be Nintendo's powerful library of first-party games, with most featuring characters dating to the NES. Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, and Samus have a public identity that characters on the other current consoles have had a difficult time matching. The main challenge for Nintendo is that, lacking further compelling intellectual properties, there are only so many ways to iterate on such old franchises. The difference in the reception for games like Donkey Kong Country Returns and Metroid: the Other M highlights the corner Nintendo appears to be painting itself into.
With that said, here are some of the best reasons to buy the Wii in 2011, if you're one of the seemingly few Americans that haven't already done so.
A back catalog that features some core gaming appeal
I'll be up front about admitting this: the Wii has failed to capture my gaming attention in the same way that the cheap xbox 360 controller and cheap ps3 controller have over the last few years. This is not an article intended to bash the Wii, however, but point out that there are enough strong titles with core gaming appeal to recommend the 'lesser' console. Though Nintendo games are definitely heavy on platforming, titles such as both Super Mario Galaxy games, the aforementioned Donkey Kong, and intriguing new titles such as Red Steel can bring in gamers from other platforms.
Legend of Zelda will get the MotionPlus treatment
There is no release date for the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but the game looks set to offer classic Zelda gameplay with accurate, immersive sword-play by taking advantage of MotionPlus. Previous Zelda titles on the Wii have met with mixed reaction, even from long-time fans of the series, but if the core gameplay is strong enough with Skyward Sword, it is possible a Zelda game may finally have some appeal beyond its dedicated fan-base.
Innovative new I.P. is coming this year
At first glance, Lost in Shadow is a generic side-scrolling platformer, but the title looks poised to offer an innovative experience when it releases on January 4th. The primary reason for this is that your character has no physical being, instead existing only as a shadow on the background. This creates an interesting sense of depth, as the player's focus shifts from the typical foreground objects to the shadows cast behind them. Early previews have indicated that this shift in perspective not only freshens the core platforming experience, but sets the stage for interesting puzzle mechanics.
Conduit 2 might be the first good FPS on the console
First-person shooters are typically not representative of the family-friendly image Nintendo has been trying to cultivate with the Wii, but they are also one of the most popular genres, especially among 'core' gamers. The recent re-make of the N64 classic Goldeneye got mixed, but mostly positive, reviews by updating an older game but there have been no new successful games in the genre to date on the Wii. The first game in the Conduit series was underwhelming to most, but reports indicate that that the sequel due February 15th may solve many of the first game's problems. Similar to Skyward Sword above, much of this is due to full support for the more accurate MotionPlus controller.
Very little is known about Nintendo's release schedule in 2011, but this year might be the year that core gamers who have dismissed the Wii take a second look. Rumors have swirled over the last few months about a price cut, which is entirely possible, but the Wii is currently stuck at the current $199 price point. The default console is available in either white or black, but the special holiday edition of the Wii is highly recommended if gamers find it in stock. This red version of the Wii features an extra game (New Super Mario Bros.) bundled in; more importantly, it features the revised Wii controller with the MotionPlus accessory integrated into the shell.
