Hedging in Scientific Research Articles

Hedging in Scientific Research Articles

$173

This book provides a comprehensive study of hedging in academic research papers, relating a systematic analysis of forms to a pragmatic explanation for their use. Based on a detailed examination of journal articles and interviews with research scientists, the study shows that the extensive use of possibility and tentativeness in research writing is intimately connected to the social and institutional practices of academic communities and is at the heart of how knowledge comes to be socially accredited through texts. The study identifies the major forms, functions and distribution of hedges and explores the research article genre in detail to present an explanatory framework based on a complex social and ideological interpretive environment. The results show that hedging is central to Scientific argument, individual scientists and, ultimately, to science itself. The importance of hedging to student writers is also recognised and a chapter devoted to teaching implications.

Password (Video Games)

Password (Video Games)

$76.47

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. n many video games of the 8 and 16bit eras, after a level was beaten and/or when all continues were used, the game would display a password, that when entered in the game would allow the player to return back to this part in the game. This way, nothing needed to be written on the cartridge, as the password itself contained all the information needed to continue the game. The password was used in cartridge based systems generally to lower costs, since the memory card was built in to the cartridge, often doubling the manufacturing cost. Passwords helped to keep production costs down on low volume titles by smaller thirdparty developers. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. Artificial Intelligence (Video Games)

Artificial Intelligence (Video Games)

$73.28

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Game artificial intelligence refers to techniques used in computer and video games to produce the illusion of intelligence in the behavior of nonplayer characters (NPCs). The techniques used typically draw upon existing methods from the field of artificial intelligence (AI). However, the term game AI is often used to refer to a broad set of algorithms that also include techniques from control theory, robotics, computer graphics and computer science in general. Since game AI is centered on appearance of intelligence and good gameplay, its approach is very different from that of traditional AI; hacks and cheats are acceptable and, in many cases, the computer abilities must be toned down to give human players a sense of fairness. This, for example, is true in firstperson shooter games, where NPCs otherwise perfect aiming would be beyond human skill. Golden Age of Video Arcade Games

Golden Age of Video Arcade Games

$78.07

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The golden age of video arcade games was a peak era of video arcade game popularity, innovation, and earnings. The consensus as to its exact time period varies. Walter Day of Twin Galaxies places it as lasting from January 18, 1982 to January 5, 1986. Video game journalist Steven L. Kent, in his book The Ultimate History of Video Games, places it from 1979 to 1983. Other opinions place this periods beginning in the late 1970s, when color arcade games became more prevalent and video arcades themselves started appearing outside of their traditional bowling alley and bar locales, through to its ending in the mid1980s.
