dark Sector (PS3) $4.99 It's been a long road getting to the publication of Dark Sector. It was announced by Digital Extremes way back in the heady days of 2004, back when the PS3 was a glimmer on the horizon. It's been that long coming. Four years on, and the year 2008 sees the release of the game in partnership with D3 Publisher of Europe. This third-person shooter has much in common with Gears of War in its cover system, forcing you to run from one spot to another or watch your brains decorate the wall. If you're going to spend your hard earned cash on Dark Sector, however, it won't be for just another third-person shooter. Nope, you'll be buying it for the glaive. 'The what now!?' you may well cry. Probably best for a bit of plot at this point. Players take on the role of Hayden Tenno, a special agent dispatched to a small former-USSR country named Lasria to take care of a nasty chap going by the name of Mezner. Mezner, you see, has gone and got his paws on a chemical weapon that has folk into all sorts of nasty, monstrous types with strange abilities. Not far into the mission, however, he gets exposed to the weapon and finds himself with a metal-like arm. A bladed disc grows out of his arm, and lo and behold, you have the glaive. The glaive can do all sorts of wonderful things. As well as being thrown for a spot of decapitation, it can be used for things like stealing fire, ice and electricity and then hurling them at your opponents. As you progress through the game, the number of abilities the glaive gives you will keep on trundling upwards. As you'd expect from any shooter in the age of the wonderful Interweb, Dark Sector comes complete with a multiplayer mode, supported either online or over LAN. |

Nintendo 3DS Will Miss special occasions, however, there is a Silver Lining
After telling the world last March it were built with a 3D, portable gaming system that did not require 3D glasses, Nintendo (NTDOY) finally held a conference to announce its release date a couple weeks ago. The large news was that the handheld system, the 3DS, would on store shelves in Japan on february 26th along with North American ahead of the end of March 2011. Unfortunately for Nintendo, the headlines told a different sort of story, declaring, regardless, that a delay by Nintendo meant may well miss this years holiday shopping season.
The odd thing is that there are no delay. Using their first announcement instruction online March, which came to be a short news release possibly designed to jump prior to any leaks, Nintendo claimed not wearing running shoes would purchase the new machine out by March 2011. So while Nintendo will indeed miss the break shopping blitz, it never supposed to release the product or service before 2011.
M2 Research analyst, Billy Pidgeon, however, thinks the top problem was the announcement and not the production date. "May well have really pumped the quarter," receiving the 3DS on shelves this holidays, according to him, even so the announcement launched a demand their marketing wasn't quite ready to deal with.
Complicating matters, precisely the same day Nintendo announced the 3DS' release date, it cut its profit forecast for this fiscal year by 55%, citing a stronger than predicted yen, but also blaming "the decided release conditions with the Nintendo 3DS." The sales assumptions just for this holidays through-out their hardware also took a dive, since sales on the current handheld, the DS, may suffer because customers know a greater method is just around the corner. None of this helped with the negative headlines.
But Pidgeon sees a technique the location where the headlines saw madness. He points to Nintendo's traditionally cautious attitude toward its hardware, which it never subsidizes, he states, always ensuring that to sell everything at a profit, including new systems. Even though Nintendo could have pushed the 3DS by the holidays, Pidgeon questions whether it could have been economical to take action. Instead, he says, Nintendo could possibly be "best putting it out in a slow period," giving retailers an opportunity to discount the current DS while clearing space for the new and exciting product to market throughout the industry's lean times.
The 3DS won't be cheap either. At 30,000 yen in Japan (about $360), it can be twice the expense of an original R4 DS at its launch in 2004 (Nintendo hasn't announced prices for United states or all of those other world). But, Pidgeon says, the more expensive expense of new cellular phones like Apple's (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch give Nintendo the room to obtain more money for the cool product. He also expects smaller shipments to begin with, with Nintendo putting out enough 3DS units to the early adopters who won't balk with the price. As manufacturing costs go down, Nintendo Ds R4 can increase shipment and lower the retail price over time for the following year.
Throwing some cold water on those early headlines, Pidgeon says, "overall, the effect may possibly be positive."
