dark Sector (Xbox 360) $5.99 It's been a long road getting to the publication of Dark Sector. It was announced by Digital Extremes way back in the heady days of 2004, back when the Xbox 360 was still the Xbox 2. It's been that long coming. Four years on, and the year 2008 sees the release of the game in partnership with D3 Publisher of Europe. This third-person shooter has much in common with Gears of War in its cover system, forcing you to run from one spot to another or watch your brains decorate the wall. If you're going to spend your hard earned cash on Dark Sector, however, it won't be for just another third-person shooter. Nope, you'll be buying it for the glaive. 'The what now!?' you may well cry. Probably best for a bit of plot at this point. Players take on the role of Hayden Tenno, a special agent dispatched to a small former-USSR country named Lasria to take care of a nasty chap going by the name of Mezner. Mezner, you see, has gone and got his paws on a chemical weapon that has folk into all sorts of nasty, monstrous types with strange abilities. Not far into the mission, however, he gets exposed to the weapon and finds himself with a metal-like arm. A bladed disc grows out of his arm, and lo and behold, you have the glaive. The glaive can do all sorts of wonderful things. As well as being thrown for a spot of decapitation, it can be used for things like stealing fire, ice and electricity and then hurling them at your opponents. As you progress through the game, the number of abilities the glaive gives you will keep on trundling upwards. As you'd expect from any shooter in the age of the wonderful Interweb, Dark Sector comes complete with a multiplayer mode, supported either online or over LAN. |

Burnout Revenge (Xbox 360) $13.95 Just think… incredibly enough, some gamers, somewhere will not have been exposed to Burnout Revenge on its previous release. Players whose first and only console was a 360 (are there really such beings!?) have waited for around four months to get involved, and can now get their mitts on the brute. What have they been missing? Blimey, where to start? Manna from heaven for those not sated by the Electronic Arts-ified Burnout Takedown from 2004, Revenge restates the case for BO's claim as the most insanely quick racing series. Truth told, in the initial gameplay, there's not a great deal of difference between Takedown and Revenge; even as far as an hour into the single-player game, the uptempo sounds of popular beat combos Yellowcard, Bloc Party and Dead 60s are the sole pointer as to the game's release date, what with EA being all up to date and hip to all the best new driving music. Ahem. Oh, the Revenge motif that keeps cropping up too - that's a giveaway. So, after an hour, we've made a hi-definition dent in more than a few shiny cars, and only a 3% impression in the game as a whole. We're no maths geniuses, but we reckon that could mean around 35-40 hours of solo gameplay, depending on how well you progress and whether you're satisfied with a merely 'good' performance and a bronze medal in any given event. Race events are plentiful: Race is as simple as it gets, as you take down rivals in a no-holds barred rampage to the finishing line; Traffic Attack invites you to beat time targets as you race through busy thoroughfares; Burning Lap is a beat the clock event; Road Rage gives you a time limit and a remit to take out as many rivals as possible; Eliminator is a last-man-standing event; Preview is a quick test drive of some ridiculously fast vehicles against the clock; and GP Race is a multi-race battle, the fastest of the lot. Through Xbox Live, the 'brand-new-for-360' Live Revenge feature tracks your rivals and calls out those that need some serious payback. Build up relationships with gamers that you take out, or take you down, and then let Live Revenge recall them and tell you how they are literally rubbing you up the wrong way. Burnout Revenge is about long memories and short tempers, especially on 360. Crash events are preceded by a fly-by crash-camera sequence from which you can plan a trail of destruction to score the maximum of points, and are an interesting diversion from the main game at best. The second iteration of Burnout (Point of Impact) still features - in our opinion - the ultimate version of the Crash event. Still, there's hours of fun to be had in both solo and multi-player modes. There's a World Tour campaign to take on, with its own Crash and Race events. It's all a bit too reminiscent of Burnout Takedown to be an absolutely essential purchase for those who still have the 2004 game in their possession, but to the few gamers who have resisted the franchis |

Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360) $10.95 Forza Motorsport 2 is Microsoft's answer to Sony's much-admired Gran Turismo series and the follow up to the delightfully rendered Xbox original. That game caused more than a few ripples on its release, and is one of the reasons for hanging on to Microsoft's debut console. Well, make room now, get rid of the old and bring in the new with Forza 2. At the time of release, Forza is well ahead of Gran Turismo for PS3 (and yes, that's including the laughable GTHD on PS3 Network) and from what we've seen so far, looks like racing away with the honours regarding race car simulations. With a plethora of racing options available, there's something for everyone, whether playing solo or via system link or online. And the number of cars available is huge. From A to Z (well, Acura to Volvo - no sign of Wartburg Knight or Zil here) and lots in between, some very desirable motors are on offer, including models from Lamborghini, Maserati, Panoz, Porsche, Audi, Shelby, Subaru, Nissan, Pagani and Saleen and many more. And unlike the cars in Gran Turismo, panels get bent out of shape, bumpers get dislodged…so once you've customised you motor with a shiny paint job and fancy decals, take a photograph of it, 'cos it probably won't stay like that for long. In Arcade mode, there are three sections: Free Run, Time Trials and Exhibition. Free Run is a solo drive around any unlocked track in an unlocked car. Time Trials is where you are charged with setting the fastest lap time on a specific track with a specific car. Each track has a time you have to beat, and when you do, you unlock that car. Exhibition is where you compete wheel-to-wheel against CPU-controlled drivers to unlock new cars and race series. To unlock the next series of cars and races, you must place in the top three in all races in the current series. Which position you cross the finishing line in determines how many cars you unlock, and cars that you unlock in Exhibition mode can be used in Free Run and Time trials too. Career mode is the heart of Forza 2. You can compete online or offline in a selection of race types to earn money and collect and customise cars. You begin with a small amount of in-game currency to buy and upgrade cars. As you compete in races, you have the chance to earn much more. You can also win cars by finishing first in all races in a Career event. In Career mode, some race types and events are restricted by driver level, which starts at zero. Your level increases as you progress through the game and earn credits. At the highest level, you can unlock new cars to buy and qualify for discounts from manufacturers. Saving the action you've been part of in Forza 2 is possible with the facility to save replays and take photos of you cars. These are then uploadable to the game's official site - forzamotorsport.net - for other racers to admire. Go on, put a dent in your wallet and buy this masterpiece of a game. |

Summer Athletics (Xbox 360) $5.99 Summer Athletics offers players multiplayer fun for the entire family and brings the action and excitement of the most popular summer sport disciplines right into your room. The charming 3D comic style, varying levels of difficulty and intuitive controls make Summer Athletics great fun for beginners and experts alike. You can customise your character and develop your career as a professional athlete in Career Mode, or challenge your friend in Head-to-Head competition. There are four levels of difficulty and a choice of main game modes in Arcade or Realistic. Disciplines featured include sprinting, hurdles, cycling, archery, javelin, hammer-throwing, swimming and high-diving - just like what's going on in Beijing at the time of this game's release. Unlike the games in China however, Summer Athletics has the advantage of a non-expiry date for entertainment. |

The Orange Box (Xbox 360) $13.95 The Orange Box from Valve is a real bargain for anyone yet to be sucked into the Half-Lifestyle erm, style. Maybe that should be Half-Life lifestyle? Let's see… The headline game is HL2: Episode Two, at the time of this pack's release, the latest offering in the series. Earth is being picked to the bone by an alien infestation. Resources are depleted and the population dwindling. As bespectacled hero Gordon Freeman, you're thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong you unleashed back at the Black Mesa Research Facility. Portal is an experimental training course sponsored by Aperture Science Laboratories. Throughout the experiment, you are asked to perform various tasks. Listen carefully to all instructions and you will most likely not be injured. When - or if - you complete the initial course, advanced training will become available from the main menu.
