Red Faction: Guerrilla (Xbox 360) $9.99 It's been seven years in the real world since the last Red Faction game, but it's been over 50 years in the game world. Things are still hostile for workers on Mars, but now they have to live in fear of the Earth Defence Force, who were the "faction" in the original game. The EDF has now taken to kidnapping people and making them work in labour camps. You play Alec Mason, who arrives on Mars just in time to see his brother murdered by the EDF, and he gets swept up in the wave of popular resistance. These themes fit well with the game's co-opting of soviet style imagery, and the whole Red Faction name. But the Red of the name is the Red Planet, Mars, and the arm holding a hammer aloft comes from the game's setting amongst the Martian mining colonies. Unlike previous Red Faction games, Guerilla is a third person game, but beyond this it has many similar themes and features to the first title in the series. Players can use melee attacks, weapons and explosives to mount an operation against the EDF. The aim is to use explosives to destroy their installations and weaken their control of various regions of Mars. The game is set in a large scale open environment, so the inclusion of vehicles is vital to getting around. The GeoMod engine that made the first games so innovative has been improved, and the ability to deform landscape and buildings is key to progressing through the game, as is creative use of explosives. There are a range of on-line multi-player modes, including the usual deathmatch and capture the flag gameplay styles, but there is also a set off-line multiplayer modes called Wrecking Crew which centre on causing as much damage as possible with limited time or ammo. |

Red Faction: Armageddon (Xbox 360) $14.99 When Red Faction: Armageddon begins it’s 2170 – that’s Fifty years on from the date that the Red Faction resistance movement successfully freed the colonists on planet Mars from the corrupt Earth Defense Force in Red Faction: Guerrilla, again from THQ. The player returns to Mars this time to take on the character of Darius Mason, the grandson of revolution heroes Alec Mason and Samanya. Unfortunately Mason unknowingly unleashes an evil force hidden for many, many years. It’s only fair, therefore that it’s up to Darius and, as ever, the Red Faction itself to once again save Mars for the good of all. Red Faction: Armageddon, unlike Red Faction: Guerrilla, does not focus its action on the use of competitive multi-player modes. The fully deformable environment familiar to old RF gamers is retained and in it the player must now first recapture and then defend fortifications against the Martian monsters called up from the ancient mines. Freeing the human prisoners from the cocoons of these creatures is the order of the day as the action switches from open world to a more controlled and narrative form of gameplay. The game features Darius’ Magnet Gun which enables the gamer to have his character in this shooter aim at one object then a second in order to have the projectile cannon from first to second. Developer Volition has also included the ability for gamers to hunt for alien artefacts with which to build hybrid weapons such as the Trembler and the Rhino Charge. Along with this weapons-building ability comes the return of the The Nano-Forge to reform destroyed items into new ones. The Hammer, the Singularity Bomb and the Plasma Beam all return. The first two are seen in the forms of the Maul and Singularity Cannon. Finally, new to the game in is new co-operative Extermination mode, where up to four players can team up to fight against waves of increasingly challenging enemies. |

Crackdown 2 (Xbox 360) $44.99 It's now ten years after the events that left Pacific City in ruins, and as a newly signed up Agency enforcer it's up to you to deal with a guerilla faction known as the Cell – as well as contain a viral outbreak that has infested the world with mutants. During the daytime, the Cell rebels own the city, and you have to claw back control of the map by finding various strongholds and wiping the opposing forces out. The strength of these enemies are comparable to that of your average grunt in the original Crackdown – they're not all that powerful, unless they have the right weapons at their disposal. As light turns to dark and the moon rises, civilians and Cell soldiers alike start running for their doors and hiding away. For a brief moment, Pacific City is empty. Then you realise why everyone's gone into their homes – mutant brutes known as Freaks crawl out of the sewers and roam the city at night. Become an Agent all over again and rediscover how fun it is to mess around in a big sandbox like Pacific City. Upgrade your abilities and leap over buildings and vehicles. Destroy the Cell and contain the Freak outbreak, and enforce your side of the law. In terms of multiplayer, alongside the usual Xbox Live co-operative play is the brand new PvP mode called Rocket Tag. The name speaks for itself – run into an orb and you become 'it.' Everyone else has rockets. Hilarity ensues. Add jump pads and the human desire for making things go boom and you have a real winner here. |
