DC Universe Online - An Action MMO Gaming Review
DC Universe is the latest in a series of major MMO releases. Set in the timeless universe of DC Marvel Comics you will be pleased to find all your childhood friends, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and all the others that frequented the Hall of Justice. There are also new additions, and some of the older ones that made cameo appearances - Poison Ivy and the like.
Bringing forth this major MMO release was no small achievement. It's an "action MMO". Players will find the never-ending leveling treadmill strongly diffused in this genre. The game features more of a "skill-centric" type of play as action MMO's are prone to do. Players will have the ability to battle with (or against) their favorite DC Universe hero's; and will also be given a "patron" hero. The patron hero is up to the player and as the game progresses to higher levels the avatars persona, equipment and countenance will begin to resemble that of the patron hero. It's kind of like being Robin, except that, it's just cooler.
Trying to fit the game into an MMO category is a little hard. Let's be honest, it doesn't have the latest and greatest graphics your seeing released for that latest Nvidia video card, in fact the environments are rather simple looking. It has been said that "graphics do not a good game make", and I think DC Universe Online is the living proof of this. Environments are interactive, phone booths can be picked up and thrown, fire hydrants as well, buildings can be damaged - this is the type of interactivity you would expect to see in a top-notch FPS release.
Mobility is another revolutionary advancement made to the MMO genre. You will not be traveling the same as everyone else, you will not be riding the same mounts as you may be used to in WOW. Each avatar will have their own unique means of travel, some can scale buildings, some can fly and others can run like flash. Until you've played it it's really hard to emphasize what a large difference this makes to the overall gaming experience - it's huge.
Player customization is another notch in DC Universe Online' s belt. Each and every character appears to be absolutely and positively unique. Colors, clothing, gear, body-type - purely customizable and to an amazing degree. We've all seen Shaman at the Crossroads and felt like we were the same as everyone else, well, we were; but no longer.
When you decide to make the plunge into DC Universe Online you'll find players already well versed and dominating at the highest levels. Sony Online Entertainment allowed all who pre-payed a beta-copy and the reviews are in; the game is great! Get on your underoos and join us.
