ModNation Racers For Your PSP
ModNation racers aim to make the kart racers what Little Big Planet did Platforms combine an established genre with a powerful creative toolset. It succeeds admirably, with a wealth of content and customization tools to karts, tracks, and players, and excellent sharing of facilities to easily upload your creations online. Single-player campaign is fun and rewards repeat play with new things, but multiplayer is where the game thrives, with six players support both locally and online. This iteration is not as fully equipped as its PlayStation 3 counterpart, but judged on its own merits, the PSP version of ModNation Racers is a fun and rewarding into the kart racing genre.

Single player campaign is fun and addictive but ModNation best played with friends either online or locally.
ModNation Racers starts by dropping you into its single-player Career mode - a story-driven campaign, where you aim to take a rookie driver to the top of ModNation Racing Championship. There are two main goals: to finish every race over a specific position in order to qualify for the next event, and for achieving objectives to unlock new creative content. Each race has its own criteria - you may have in a number of topics or sideswipe a series of opponents, while the long-term goals such as to make one thousand runs, unlock even more items. This means that there is a constant stream of new things that you play and the fun and varied challenges add to the game's addictive and replay value.
Racing itself should be familiar to karting veterans because it is based on well-worn genre mechanics. Each track has shortcuts, jump, and boost pads, while collectible weapons such as rockets and electricity allows you to attack other racers. The basics are easy to understand, but ModNation Racers brings a lot of its gameplay. You'll be rewarded with points for jumps, stunting, drifting and drafting, and these points fill a power bar that fuels a variety of kart features. You can choose to protect yourself against incoming attacks by diverting power to a shield, go faster by increasing or sign opponents with a sideswipe. This risk-reward mechanic makes racing deep and exciting as you need to master all these facets to succeed.
ModNation's Career mode provides some thoughtful and varied tracks that feature crazy jumps, devious traps, and timesaving shortcuts. There are a number of different types of events, including just ran, ran with power-ups, and PSP-specific Last Kart portrait mode where the player in last place is eliminated at predetermined time intervals. You will run into a few rough holes, whatever event you tackle. Handling feels a little too easily, which means that drifting is not as precise or satisfying. The challenging AI makes the Career mode difficult at times, and while it is never unreasonable, beat the challenges to open up all the extra content is a great achievement.
ModNation Racers have a wealth of unlockable content that you can use to create tracks, karts and racers.
When you start releasing content, although the game's creation tools allow you to set these bonuses to good use. You can create your own karts, racing cars and tracks, either from scratch or by modifying existing creations. There are so many items available when you've locked them in Career mode, and the tools make use all this content a breeze. The advanced options are not quite as generous as they are on the PS3 - you can change the color of most objects, but you can not change their location or size. That said, if the content has been locked up, it's still easy to create something unique.
The level creation tools are some of the best yet seen in a handheld game. To create a track that simply run out basic form the same way you control a kart, and then customize it by placing items, change the track material and deforms the landscape. The tools are not quite as powerful as they are on the PS3 - the game does not automatically create bridges when you cross over the track, for example. Yet the tools are simple to pick up thanks to a sensible interface design, and it's pretty easy to create something people will want to race on. Once you've made your creations, you'd rather upload them online so others can find and download. Your title and associated keywords help other people find your content, while ratings and downloads for the best content rises to the top. It's quick and easy to pick what content you find on your PSP, and the community have already begun to use the tools to create all the things you would expect, including cartoon characters, iconic '80s television show cars, and the famous tracks from other racing games. The game also does a good job of seamlessly share that content among users when you play online, as any custom content is downloaded automatically in the background.
While the single player campaign is fun, the real enjoyment comes from multiplayer. The game offers support for both local and online play for up to six players who are not huge, but it's the same number of racers in the single-player game. It's easy to host a game, and select racing options or to find a lobby and join others games. The only downside is that there are usually only a few games available at any given time.
