The Tomb Raider Trilogy (PS3) $24.99 Three Tomb Raider games, one Blu-ray disc. In The Tomb Raider Trilogy, you get Legend and Anniversary for the first time on the PS3, along with the return of Underworld. With Legend, Lara is searching for a South American relic, but everything changes dramatically when she comes across a deadly character from her past - the peroxide-blonde, tattooed Amanda Evert - and then finds herself in a dangerous pursuit to find one of history's most famous artefacts. Her new quest will bring her to ancient realms that guard Secrets of the Past, so get ready for some interesting revelations. Due to Lara's unquestionable athletic ability, in Legend she can perform signature moves while still firing her dual-pistols. She also has the ability to handle any obstacle in her path due to a dynamic animation system that places the focus on constant motion. There is a whole host of beautifully-rendered and mysterious locations throughout the game, which include formidable jungles, snowy mountain ruins and many others that really add intrigue to the game. Anniversary, meanwhile, brought the original Tomb Raider back to our screens, but remade for current-gen consoles. Once again Lara's on the trail of the mythical object known only as the Scion at the behest of a powerful syndicate. She's not best pleased, however, when she finds that she's being used as a pawn in a dangerous game. With that in mind, she takes it upon herself to find out just what the crack is. From there on in, its all exotic foliage, hidden temples and perilous tombs. You'll find classic environments from the original with added depth and realism. While the core of the original is kept intact, many of the puzzles and challenges have been taken in a new direction. So if you're one of those people who's memorised the original frame by frame, you'll still find something new here. Then we've got Underworld, which kicks off with Croft Manor burning down. There's a good mix of action and grey matter-bending puzzles, but the focus in Underworld is to truly make it your adventure game. If it hurts when you think, and therefore you don't like the puzzle element, there's a handy hints system that provide tips to overcome your current situation. When it comes to combat and exploration, there's been a few improvements there, too – most notably the introduction of the “Adrenaline Moments”, which replace the quick timed events that pit Lara in a life or death scenario. The camera angle pans to a more dynamic view and you have free control to escape the situation before you die. Similar slow motion moments can be found in attacking enemies, where your shots will become more powerful and can even land one-hit-kill headshots. That's plenty of Lara to have a go at! |

Racedriver: GRID (PS3) $12.99 Blimey. Codemasters has taken its time bringing its much-admired non-rally racer to next-gen consoles, but the good news for us punters is that it's been well worth the wait. Race Driver: Grid does everything that you could possibly want from a development team with such a pedigree, and then some. Codies signature of collision damage is present and correct (if a little buckled around the edges) and the depth and range of gameplay is astonishing. From the streets of Shibuya to the hills of San Francisco via the tight corners of Milan and the 24 gruelling hours that is Le Mans, Race Driver: Grid takes you all over the globe as you strive to make the grade as a driver of some of the most powerful racing cars outside of Formula One. Make a name for yourself and the chance to establish your own racing team is within reach, nay essential to enjoy the game to the max. Race Driver: Grid supports online multiplayer races in eye-wateringly delightful high definition (screens permitting, of course) and a seemingly endless/bottomless series of progressions via successful racing and points-scoring. It's a lean, mean racing machine alright, and one that sends the likes of Gran Turismo and Project Gotham to the scrapyard. |

Need for Speed: The Run (PS3) $27.99 Another Need for Speed game hitting our screens is an annual event as inevitable as Christmas itself. But in recent years EA has upped the ante with two or even three games per year. This year is no different, with Need for Speed The Run following on from last years spectacular NfS: Hot Pursuit in offering adrenaline pumping arcade racing thrill. This time it's Canadian developer Black Box taking on the development duties using the same Frostbite 2 engine that Battlefield 3 uses. Need for Speed: The Run looks fabulous. And the cars drive superbly too. The premise of the game is simple, you are an outlaw racer, taking part in a Cannonball Run (the Run of the title) style race across the United States - from sea to shining sea. This gives the game an episodic storyline, split into 9 main stages, with each split into shorter races. So none of that circular track racing of other games - this is back to the long distance point-to-point drags that classic Need for Speed games are famous for. Race against a set of opponents all sporting super-exotic cars, and all gunning the throttle for the same $25,000,000 prize, while at the same time avoiding the onslaught of the highway police in cars and choppers. Switch between vehicles to choose the one best suited to the changing road surfaces, and conditions. Take on friends in on-line multiplayer, and even compete with them when they are not online using the Autolog off-line multiplayer feature. NfS: The Run puts you behind the wheel of a massive selection of real-world supercars, in an epic race the likes of which has never been seen in gaming before. |

Toy Story 3 (PS3) $34.99 When a film franchise is popular enough to see a third outing hit national cinema screens, you can bet your bottom dollar that a computer game tie-in will be released to coincide with it. Fortunately enough, this particular film is Pixar Studios' amazing animation, Toy Story. And the video game tie-ins have never been too shabby either. So with this third adventure game you can expect quite a lot of entertaining fun. In the feature film Woody, Buzz Lightyear and their fellow toy friends are sent to a nearby nursery when childhood owner Andy grows up and moves out to go to college. Toy Story 3: The Video Game follows that same basic premise, with the bulk fixating on a special open-world mechanic known as Toy Box. Toy Box is literally that – a virtual box full of toys, and could perhaps be better explained in gameplay terms as a sandbox world. Playing as a variety of leading characters from the animation, you get to create your own unique story as you choose whatever kind of mission takes your fancy. Cowboys, space rangers, dinosaurs and little green aliens come together to bring you some truly imaginative adventures. There will be experiences lifted from the Toy Story 3 film, as well as those that place you in non-film related environments and situations too. Ensure Woody and Buzz don't get left behind in Andy's imagination and create your own wacky adventure. |
