Bayonetta (PS3) $4.99 Firing up Bayonetta, there's a fairly obvious comparison to be made – it looks a lot like Devil May Cry. While Bayonetta is not the latest DMC game, however, it is the brainchild of Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Devil May Cry. While Bayonetta is set in the same twilight demi-monde as the DMC series, instead of featuring Dante, this new game features a statuesque leather-cum-hair clad witch who carries the same name as the game. Bayonetta is a witch, and she wields the dark arts. The game's story revolves her having been missing for 500 years and then woken up with little memory of who she is. Unfortunately, she's found herself stuck in the middle of a pitched battle between good and evil, and she's on no one's side but her own. Her opponents are angels and heavenly hosts who she has to defeat on a daily basis to avoid being thrust down to hell, so the morality of the storyline is ambiguous to say the least. Bayonetta is, basically, a series of boss battles linked by a series of high-camp cut scenes. There is exploring and collecting items, but not so much that you'll actually notice it. Bayonetta is more about fighting one huge and apparently invincible monster before going on to then battle two of the same monster, with some other smaller monsters thrown in for measure. That, when you get down to it, is what Bayonetta's all about – fast, furious, all-out combat. You wield weapons from a garden-variety samurai sword to a fireball-producing heavenly horn to guns that take the place of your bootheels. When Bayonetta destroys an opponent or deformable set dressing items (plants, benches and the like) she is rewarded with collectible items and golden halos. The latter are the currency of the game, and can be spent in the 'Gates of Hell' bar and shop. Each battle results in a score and a medal. You are rewarded for combos and for not using items. You are penalised for taking damage. If you take too much damage it is possible to lose points in the course of completing a level of the game. Players might complete Bayonetta in a little over 10 hours. But it's unlikely that you'll do so with a very high score, or a collection of platinum level completion statues, so there are bucket-loads of re-playability. There are also five difficulty levels. 'Normal' is challenging, so you'll have to come back prepared and practised to complete it in the most difficult mode. It's also worth noting that there's an ultra-easy setting, which pretty much just requires you to just hit a button from time to time and the game will do the rest, so while this is a decidedly hardcore game in style, it's hugely accessible to newcomers. Even if you do become a grand master of Bayonetta, working your way up through the difficulty levels, this is not a game that is going lose it's visual appeal any time soon. |

Turok (PS3) $9.99 An ex-member of Wolf Pack, the most ruthless Black Ops squad around, Joseph Turok is charged with capturing and detaining his former colleague and mentor Roland Kane from his fortress on a backwater planet. Trouble is, this planet has been genetically altered, and after Turok's ship is shot down on approaching the planet, he has to use every ounce of nous and bravery to evade the armies of highly-trained soldiers in the first place. The massive insects and myriad ravenous dinosaurs have to be dealt with too! Sure enough, Turok for 2008 comes with a single-player option dubbed Story Mode, but the game also boasts fantastic online multiplayer features with a selection of modes and maps for between 2 and 16 players. There are 10 multiplayer maps in all, including seven competitive maps and three cooperative-specific missions. Competitive multiplayer modes include Capture the Flag, Assault-style Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and War Games, a special objective-based game mode. Turok's co-op feature allows up to four players to team up online in maps inspired by the single-player story but designed specifically for the co-op mode. Unique to Turok, and like the game's single-player campaign, the multiplayer modes include dinosaurs and large insects, which may attack any player and can be lured to attack opponents. The game is powered by the much-admired Unreal Technology software, thus making it a first-person shooter with great pedigree and no little style. It may be light on the bad language, and not too bloody and gory, but there's plenty of ultraviolence on offer in Turok. If you harbour a dislike for dinosaurs, genuinely smart soldiers and huge insects, fall in line with 2008's Turok. |

Wet (PS3) $9.99 Wet introduces gamers to Rubi, a beautiful and graceful assassin voiced by Dollhouse star Eliza Dushku. And like Dushku's Dollhouse character, Echo, Eliza is a problem fixer, but she does this by utilising her acrobatic and swordplay skills. Rubi agrees to find and retrieve the wayward son of a millionaire... and things get interesting. Mislead and deceived, Rubi end up on the run, desperate to find the man who started all this chaos. Wet is a visually impressive, super-stylised action game that combines the acrobatics of Mirrors Edge with the sword wielding action of Devil May Cry, then throws in lashing of Kill Bill style mayhem to create something unlike any game before it. Rubi, under your control, undergoes double-crosses. Makes and enemies and allies. Fights with guns and swords, leaving a huge body count in your wake in an adventure that spans three continents. Rubi rarely keeps her feet on the ground, combining her arial and wall-running skills with her expert swords(wo)manship to perform deadly, dramatic and impressive moves. Like in Kill Bill's tea house scene, enemies just keep coming, and by linking her moves, Rubi keeps on taking them down, resulting in non-stop action and an astronomical body count. At certain points, Rubi sees red, and enters Rage Mode - the graphics all turn red and white, and it all looks very stylish and cool. Wet concentrates on creating a compelling single-player experience, and has no multi-player options whatsoever. But this should not prevent fans of stylish action from getting a huge dose of their favourite gameplay. |

Lost (PS3) $4.99 Oceanic Flight 815 out of Sydney, Australia is mysteriously brought down out of the sky and crashes on an uncharted island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The survivors quickly learn they must band together in order to have any chance of rescue, because the island is treacherous and holds many secrets. And as they will soon find out, the survivors have secrets of their own. Like the other castaways, the lead character in the game has a shady past that has brought him to the island, and he must redeem himself in order to find a way home. At the beginning of the game, the photojournalist is suffering from amnesia and needs to find out who he is through playable flashbacks, interacting with other castaways, and exploring the island. Talking to the other castaways is vital for your survival and helping you to find out who you are and how you got there. As you approach someone, you'll be able to initiate a conversation if the appropriate button appears. When you enter into a dialogue with a survivor, you'll have a selection of categories and subjects to talk about. Pay careful attention to what they have to offer and they might just point you in the right direction. Your inventory is also important, and comes in the form of an on-screen backpack. Valuable items such as coconuts and bottles of water are collectible and can be made available for trading purposes. You are on a secluded island after all, and cash money is no use at all. Certain characters - especially Sawyer - are very astute at trading, and can usually help you out…at a 'price'. Lost couldn't possibly follow the path trodden by the television series: it's too convoluted by far, but the game does a fair job of invoking the impression of uncertainty and looming dread that TV watchers will be familiar with. Whether viewers will take to the videogame and its genuinely immersive atmosphere remains to be seen. If you want to relive the early days of Lost, this gives you the chance to be a virtual survivor without getting sand between your toes while still having to sort out the puzzles and mysteries that the island offers. |

Bulletstorm (PS3) $14.99 There are few first-person shooters out there that can claim to be the nuttiest, frantic and most ridiculous experience, but People Can Fly and Epic Games have something right here with Bulletstorm. The story is very serious - Grayson Hunt and Ishi Sato, two members from the Dead Echo mercenary group, learn they’ve been working for the wrong side and have been exiled to the far reaches of the universe thanks to a betrayal by their commander. Set in a futuristic utopia, an elite peacekeeping force thwarts the rumblings of civil war. Brink (PS3) $12.49 Built by Enemy Territory: Quake Wars developer Splash Damage, Brink is a first-person shooter set on The Ark, a seaborne city existing in a post-apocalypse-y sort of a world in which water levels have risen and The Ark may be the last bastion of humanity. See, no ships have been seen for some 20 years and The Ark's bosses, convinced this factoid heralds the end of humanity beyond floating city limits, have stopped anyone leaving. That might be OK if The Ark wasn't massively over-populated, with the have-nots living in derelict slums and the haves living in posh splendour. This state of affairs breeds discontent, and revolution is in the air. A resistance movement is looking to break out of the city, while security forces attempt to keep humanity together on The Ark. You can play as one of four character classes as both security and the resistence. The soldier carries ammo to resupply teammates and, at appropriate points, blows stuff up. The medic heals his comrades and buffs (boosts) their health. The engineer repairs strategic assets, buffs allies' weapons and creates handy bits and pieces like machine gun turrets. The operative sneaks around in disguise and gathers intel on things like enemy positions and where land mines are lurking. If you've played Team Fortress you've got an idea of how it works. Rather than being pinned to a class for the duration of Brink - or even for a single mission - you can chop and change throughout the course of the game at command, health and supply posts. Splash Damage has built what it's calling the SMART (Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain) System into the game. To most of us, that means you can pull off free-running moves across elements of the environment by simply running at them with the left bumper button held down. Brink isn't really separated into single- and multi-player components – at least not in the way most of us are used to. The campaign can be played either on your lonesome with the help of bots or with other humans online. Beyond the fact that humans and bots might behave a bit differently, gameplay won't be altered a jot one way or the other. And, frankly, Splash Damage has done a convincing job of making the AI behave like human players. Brink is a decidedly 'core' game for experienced FPS places. If you fit that bill, you'll find a deep, strategy-laden game in Brink. |

Darksiders (PS3) $12.99 Post-apocalyptic settings seem to be the bread and butter of action/adventure-based games these days. It could be that it's a product of the ambiguous times we live in, but games makers seem to be a little bit obsessed with the End of the World as We Know it. Seldom has there been so literal an embodiment of that mentality as in Darksiders, however. The Apocalypse has happened. We're not talking the nuclear kind, or the alien attack kind or the swine flu kind. We're talking the full-on, biblical four horsemen kind. That's your REAL Apocalypse. Thing is, it's come a bit off schedule. Read: early. War (the horseman) was found at the scene and he's taking the blame for it. Determined to get to the bottom of it all, off he trots to drill down through all the mystery and get to The Truth. When you're War, however, it's not about asking questions and putting the clues together, it's about messing people up with your Great Big Sword. It's about hack-'n'-slash brawling, exploration and puzzling. The action plays out largely as a mixture of brawling and light platforming. Players overcome all manner of undead, demony monsters, and they have quite an arsenal to do it with. For example, you've got chains that might look familiar if you've played God of War. These can be used to not just take out enemies, but to manipulate the environment. There's also the X Blabe, a typically-massive tool that, once thrown, will return to you. It can also pick up environmental effects such as flames. You get the idea. Also up for grabs is an ever-growing array of abilities, such as some ethereal wings that can be used for gliding – helpful for exploration and platforming – and the blade geyser which sees (great big!) pointy things shooting from the ground around War. You're going to need the whole lot, too, because the boss battles are nothing short of epic... On top of all that there's plenty to explore, with huge great sprawling levels littered with physics-based puzzles to bend your head around. So, what's War good for? Darksiders, that's what. |
