E/OS $76.47 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. E/OS (Emulator Operating System) is a virtual machine emulation system. E/OS is primarily based on the Linux kernel, QEMU, XFree86, and Wine, and is intended to be a replacement for operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, BeOS, OS/2, DOS, and Linux. It aims to make it possible to run any program designed for any operating system without the need to actually install any other operating system. Thus only one operating system, in this case a free alternative to the systems mentioned, would be needed to implement all programs. The project was discontinued in July 2008. RISC OS $66.91 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles RISC OS is a computer operating system which was originally developed by Acorn Computers Ltd in Cambridge, England for their range of desktop computers, based on the ARM chipset. It was first released in 1988 as RISC OS 2.00, having been derived from Acorns Arthur operating system, with the addition of cooperative multitasking. The operating system takes its name from the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) architecture used on supported systems. Since 1988, RISC OS has been bundled with nearly every Acorn computer model, including the Archimedes range of computers, and RiscPC and A7000 computers. After the breakup of Acorn in 1998, development of RISC OS was continued by several companies, including RISCOS Ltd and Castle Technology Ltd. Also since 1998, RISC OS has been bundled with a number of ARM based Acorn Clone personal computers such as the Iyonix and A9home. Mac OS $129.05 Mac OS is the trademarked name for a series of graphical user interfacebased operating systems developed by Apple Inc. (formerly Apple Computer, Inc.) for their Macintosh line of computer systems. The Macintosh user experience is credited with popularizing the graphical user interface. The original form of what Apple would later name the Mac OS was the integral and unnamed system software first introduced in 1984 with the original Macintosh, usually referred to simply as the System software. It was a trimmeddown version of the operating system underpinning Apples earlier Lisa product. Apple deliberately downplayed the existence of the operating system in the early years of the Macintosh to help make the machine appear more userfriendly and to distance it from other operating systems such as MSDOS, which was more arcane and technically challenging Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 196 Publication Date: 2009/11/24 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.44 inches |

Lse/OS $76.47 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The LSE/OS kernel was a research kernel designed by a French research laboratory named Epita System Laboratory. The project is now open source. The main goal of the kernel was to never crash prompting the original designers to implement it as a modular nanokernel instead of the traditional monolithic kernel of traditional operating systems. This choice was good because it allowed the drivers and services code to be moved out of the kernel (to user space). These services would then become unprivileged processes so that any error that occurs e.g. in a driver wont crash the system. In a monolithic kernel this is impossible. Lobos (Linux OS Boots OS) $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles LOBOS is a software program (or system ) that allows remote booting ( netbooting ) of a personal computer without using a BIOS. It allows one kernel to boot another kernel. LOBOS is part of an effort to move away from fixed, proprietary BIOSes to systems that allow more adaptability, especially with different physical peripheral devices. A personal computer (PC) is any generalpurpose computer whose size, capabilities, and original sales price make it useful for individuals, and which is intended to be operated directly by an end user with no intervening computer operator. This is in contrast to the batch processing or timesharing models which allowed large expensive mainframe systems to be used by many people, usually at the same time, or large data processing systems which required a fulltime staff to operate efficiently. Moon OS $81.25 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Monoppix is a Live CD Linux distribution (based on Knoppix), that works without installing anything on your hard drive, running completely off the CD and RAM. The main purpose of this distribution was to showcase and spread Mono technology, a free .NET Framework implementation for Linux and Unix operating systems. A GNU/Linux distribution (also called Linux distribution by some vendors and users) is a member of the family of Unixlike software distributions built on top of the Linux kernel. Such distributions (often called distros for short) consist of a large collection of software applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, media players and database applications. The operating system will consist of the Linux kernel and, usually, a set of libraries and utilities from the GNU project, with graphics support from the X Window System. Distributions optimized for size may not contain X, and tend to use more compact alternatives to the GNU utilities such as Busybox, uClibc or dietlibc. It also covers the development and packaging tools, as well as providing some detailed reference and examples for key APIs. |

The Symbian OS Architecture Sourcebook $70 The current Symbian Press list focuses very much on the small scale features of Symbian OS in a programming context. The Architecture Sourcebook is different. It's not a how-to book, it's a 'what and why' book. And because it names names as it unwinds the design decisions which have shaped the OS, it is also a 'who' book. It will show where the OS came from, how it has evolved to be what it is, and provide a simple model for understanding what it is, how it is put together, and how to interface to it and work with it. It will also show why design decision were made, and will bring those decisions to life in the words of Symbian's key architects and developers, giving an insider feel to the book as it weaves the "inside story" around the architectural presentation. The book will describe the OS architecture in terms of the Symbian system model. It will show how the model breaks down the system into parts, what role the parts play in the system, how the parts are architected, what motivates their design, and how the design has evolved through the different releases of the system. Key system concepts will be described; design patterns will be explored and related to those from other operating systems. The unique features of Symbian OS will be highlighted and their motivation and evolution traced and described. The book will include a substantial reference section itemising the OS and its toolkit at component level and providing a reference entry for each component. |

What You Need to Know About Installing Linux on PS3
Before you go ahead with the process of installing Linux on PS3, there are some things you will want to know. One of the first things you will have to do is make enough room on your game console for it, because it will take up a decent amount of space. You will need to plug in a USB keyboard/mouse and use them to go to the XMB menu. After you have confirmed that they are in full working order, you will be able to back up all of the games that you have saved thus far to a USB flash drive. This is a very important step, because you certainly don't want to lose all of the data that you accumulated from playing endless hours of PS3 games.
The second step in the process of installing Linux on PS3 involves formatting your hard drive so you will be able to install the open-source OS on it. You will want to go to "System", "Format drive", then "PS3 HDD". You will then want to go to "Custom" then
"10GB to PS3". The rest of the hard drive goes to the new OS you are putting on it. You should realize that by formatting your console's drive you are wiping off all data and it cannot be retrieved. After you have formatted the drive the console will restart and you will be able to log in with the data that is still there. Make sure you follow the last step to the letter, which is switching Linux to the default OS for your game console. This is an important step that you certainly want to get right the first time around.
