Start The Party! (PS3) $9.99 Sony has had a lot of success with the PlayStation 2 EyeToy Play games, and with the release of the PS3 Move peripheral it makes sense that we get to enjoy another round of augmented reality-based mini-games. Start The Party! allows you to turn your living room into a funhouse once more, with over 20 different games to play and a Custom Party Mode to arrange them in any order you like! The PlayStation Eye tracks your body and shows an image of you on the TV, while the PlayStation Move is used to interact with the virtual objects to win points. Slice melons in half with your pirate sword, brush the teeth of a crocodile, pop various colours of pufferfish and whack pinatas, draw shapes, fan parachuters to raft-based safety, trim hair and swat bugs with your friends – pass the controller around for up to three additional players for maximum enjoyment. After you've beaten the clock (and your friends) in every game, a slideshow displays all the funniest photos of you moving around the room like a crazy person. Here's a meta-game for you: try and see if you can complete any of these mini-games without looking silly and having awesome fun at the end of it. Now there's the real challenge in this game. |

The Shoot (PS3) $9.99 The PlayStation Move is a great peripheral for more than sports games. Because of the accurate pointer tracking, it makes for a worthy light gun replacement too. And while most of these arcade shooters focus on zombie-blasting and firefights with evil conglomerates, The Shoot takes a more light-hearted approach in that you're in the middle of a movie set. The aim is to make an impression on the director of 'The Shoot' and see your name in lights. The only way you can do that, as an up-and-coming action star, is to take down a range of different enemies to rack up your score. You can do this using the Move controller on its own, or by using the PlayStation Move shooting attachment that will be released in tandem with the game. Work your way through five different sets, each with their own theme and style. Escape the clutches of aliens who want to take over the city in a Sci-Fi themed stage, or ready your holster as a posse of cowboys try to gun you down in a Western level. The better you do in each course, the more roles you will earn and the higher up the star-o-meter you climb. Better yet, get a friend involved and either team up to become an awesome action duo, or go head to head to find out who's got more star quality! |

Rio (PS3) $19.99 It’s high time this domesticated bird took to the skies and went on holiday - especially considering he’s originally from the tropics himself! Blu the Macaw is a domesticated sort, and as a result is generally a pretty shy type. But his life is thrown upside down when he decides to take a trip to Rio de Janeiro to meet Jewel, the only other bird of his species. This is the story behind the upcoming hit movie Rio, and the basis behind this video game tie-in. For shortly after meeting Jewel for the first time, Blu is kidnapped by some nasty animal smugglers, and the plucky hero will have to learn how to act like a real bird to escape from his prison! In this version of the video game, you’ll need the help of your friends to celebrate the Carnival ceremony in style! Compete with up to four players to get first place in the ceremony by taking part in a selection of 40 party games. Play as one of six characters - Blu, Jewel, Pedro, Nico, Raphael and Eva - in five unique modes with easy ‘jump in’ and ‘jump out’ play. This is the accessible family party game that makes you feel like you’re on holiday! |

Wolfenstein (PS3) $13.95 1992's Wolfenstein 3D will be forever known as the crazy, cartoony, Robot-Hitler-starring game that propelled the first person shooter into one of the most popular genres in the video games market. Raven Software and Activision Blizzard (with a little help from series creator id Software) have brought secret agent B.J. Blazkowicz back to our monitors (or TVs) as he attempts to stop the Nazis from using the powers of the strange occult force known as Black Sun. The Nazis (damn them!) are trying to get to the source of the Black Sun where they're going to create a weapon of ultimate destruction. Between our reality and the Black Sun lies The Veil which also allows BJ to discover Veil Powers that will help him in his mission. These powers can be used in conjunction with each other, so you can, for example, use one power to look through certain objects, spot an enemy and then use another power to enhance your firepower so you can shoot through the obstruction to kill your opponent. With the addition of puzzles, treasure hunting, weapon and power upgrades to the FPS format and a multiplayer mode that will feel familiar to fans of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, this latest Wolfenstein game is sure to keep fans playing for quite some time. |

[PROTOTYPE] (PS3) $13.95 Free roaming, super-powered games are becoming a bit of a trend in the summer of 2009 – just look at inFamous and [PROTOTYPE] Both titles are free-roaming adventures featuring a super-human person/creature/thing as they fight in a dilapidated city for their own survival and something or other. Naturally, the main thing that will set [PROTOTYPE] apart is in its storyline, and you’re given a pretty intriguing premise as you get to know the lead character, Alex Mercer. Poor old Alex has been the subject to human testing, as a lethal virus spreads throughout the country and turns the nation into a bunch of strange zombie creatures. As a result, he hungers for blood like the rest of the horde, but has somehow maintained his own conscience and free will. The game aims to piece together Alex’s forgotten past and the events that led to the experimentation. Ultimately, he’s seeking revenge on whoever made him into the monster that he is today. Not that it’s any bad thing for the player, as you get to play with all the cool new moves and abilities Alex has gained since his time under the knife. The game has you running from one location in the city to another, using different ‘forms’ to tackle various types of enemies. Facing some cops that are trying to stop him from progressing, Alex’s arms will turn into huge black claws, which can then be used in combat to shred the enemy to pieces. Later on you'll get to use boulder-type hands to knock out huge tanks and large scythe-limbs to take on the zombified horde itself, with the abilities continuing to come in thick and fast. Getting around New York is a breeze as well. [PROTOTYPE] seems to want to give you a realistic world in the style of Grand Theft Auto IV, populated with NPC citizens and a working police force, with a character that can systematically break all of the rules. It’s a great escape from reality when you feel like the most powerful guy in the world, wreaking havoc on citizens and evil zombies alike. There’s another element to [PROTOTYPE] that gets introduced as you progress through the initial chapters, and it’s the classic ‘disguise’. In grabbing people and performing a specific move to consume them, you basically absorb their identity in a Shang Tsung stylee. This adds to the roster of disguises you can use to evade capture from the SWAT teams and conspirators that are out to take you in and assumedly slam a bullet in your head. [PROTOTYPE] seems to have the hallmarks of one of those summer blockbuster popcorn flicks; an enigmatic lead, a twisted plotline, awesome and devastating powers and the sense of exhilaration you get from bouncing over cars and running up council flats. |

skate. (PS3) $10.95 SKATE brings skateboarding to the next gen consoles, allowing players to work their way up from a new skater all the way to a sponsored professional featured in magazines and taking part in large scale competitions. SKATE builds up an entire city and then allows you to travel around it freely, performing tricks wherever you want in an attempt to get a little more publicity for yourself and try to climb the ranks. Unlike other skateboarding games, you don’t use button combos to pull off more difficult tricks and you cannot slowly upgrade your skater’s stats. Tricks are performed using the directional sticks and the only way to improve your skater is that you, the player, become more comfortable with the use of the trick system. The harder the trick, the harder it is to pull off making some of the more complex trick combos, impossible for a new players to perform, but when you do, you get a real feeling of satisfaction. Online play allows you to interact with the online community in many different ways. You can try and build up your reputation by taking part in online skating competitions and prove your worth against people from all over the world to become a skating legend. You can also create videos of your character performing their tricks and send them to the online community for them to judge and rate. This finally brings the community to skateboarding and allows you to have plenty of challenges to face even after you’ve completed the single player mode. |

MAG (PS3) $10.95 Zipper has had a lot of practice in creating online spec-op games. Now the creators of SOCOM have their sights set on a bigger goal – have as many players battling for clan supremacy as possible. The result is MAG, which in turn offers a refreshing bout of organised chaos on the PlayStation Network. It starts off simple enough. Pick a side. There are three 'Private Military Corporations (or PMCs) that you can sign up for, each with their own style, approach and abilities. Then you simply build your personal soldier up from small-time rookie to Platoon Commander, in online skirmishes that can host up to 256 players. Of course, in such a large-scale environment, communication is key to survival – as well as team work. Each player is assigned to one of several eight-player squads. These squads each have a Leader; someone who has ranked up enough in the game to earn the position will get this privilege. Squads then build up to form a 32-player Platoon, again with a Leader for each. Platoons make up a 128-player Army, which has a Commander General with the power to enact certain orders and last-minute abilities. These battles are all par for the course in the Shadow War, a persistent battleground that changes landscape every time you log on. Once you sign up for a team, you should be ready to commit to its victory, 100 per cent! Now, where did we put that microphone? |

Haze (PS3) $8.95 Someone once possibly said, "football, it's a game of two halves." It is indubitably true. Just as it's true of the Beautiful Game, it's also true of Haze. Or, as Free Radical likes to tell us, it's two games in one. You have to play as Mantel Troopers, private soldiers doing the work of the Mantel Corporation in all their neon glory. Then you have to play as the rebels they're fighting in a South American backwater country, The Promised Hand. It's as a Mantel Soldier that you begin Haze, under the name of Shane Carpenter (formerly Jake Carpenter, wonderful how things change through the development process, isn't it?). If you've seen anything of Haze before reading this, you'll know that the defining feature of playing as a Mantel Trooper is Nectar. Nectar is, in essence, a performance enhancing drug (and key element of the plot). It has numerous features - the most immediate being that your enemies glow in a somewhat sinister fashion. The next most obvious feature is that you get a noticeable spring to your step when you're on the stuff. As there's no sprint button and your enemies aren't slow to take a pop at you, it's a welcome feature. Nectar gives you the mysterious ability to pre-empt explosions. Just before something goes boom, you'll see a ripple emanate from of it. I'm not sure how the science of drugs making one precognitive works, but ours is not to question why. Throw in increased strength and speedy healing, and Nectar's doing alright by you. Nectar comes with a catch, however. Pump too much into your body and you'll overdose. The result is a distinct loss of control. But Haze is a game of two halves! Halfway through the game you'll switch sides, and a whole great bunch of new, Nectarless tactics come into play. You'll try to push the Mantel Troopers into overdose by creating clouds of Nectar around them, sticking a knife dipped into the stuff in their guts, or putting a well-placed shot to their supply. Throw in sneaky tactics like playing dead, planting mines and stealing weapons and you have what is essentially a different game. Haze comes packaged with a four player co-op option that allows you to play right through the single player campaign with your mates and a bounty of multi-player options. So... it's a game of two halves and then some. |

Vancouver 2010: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Winter Games (PS3) $8.95 We never get snow in the UK. For some reason, 2010 has seen something of a blizzard head our way, however. It's perfect weather for Sega's latest Olympics game, which this time focuses on Vancouver's Winter Olympics for a change in arcade-style sports challenges. And being the master of arcade style games, Sega has taken a sort of 'International Track and Field' approach to Vancouver 2010, only without the insane button mashing. From Downhill Skiing to Bobsledding, the controls are accessible and easy to understand for anyone willing to brave the virtual cold in the name of sporting excellence. But in no way does it make the experience cheap – it can be challenging to keep your balance as you rocket around a corner in the Skeleton event. Some of the new control schemes have been introduced to make the game more exciting, and if you access the first-person camera mode, you can get a helping hand with controls and button timing. Once you've mastered various events, your best scores get added to the online leaderboards, and you can even enjoy revamped online gameplay. And if the standard set of Olympic events isn't enough for you, there's the brand new challenge mode which will test your skills by putting a spin on some of the world's best-loved sports. |
