Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3) $12.99 Question: what do you get when you cross Star Wars, Sonic the Hedgehog, a Disney Pixar movie and a high-tech backpack that talks? Answer: Ratchet and Clank - that's what (or who). Insomniac Games' cuddly platform-action-shooter finally comes to next-gen, marking the developer's second outing for the PlayStation 3 (the first being the controversial Resistance: Fall of Man). Enter plenty of running, jumping, shooting, cartoony fun; the occasional outraged string of expletives not suitable for the younger audience it's aimed at abound. From the player, that is, not the game. Or the children it's aimed at. We hope. Ratchet and Clank, if you're not familiar with the series, stars a Lovable Lombax (Ratchet) and his robot sidekick (Clank). The series is marked by colourful 3D platforming, a bizarre and entertaining array of weapons/ways to kill things and a twisting plot littered with kid-friendly cut-scenes. The good news for Ratchet and Clank veterans is that the classic elements are all still in Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction. The kids are going to love it. If you have an inner child lurking somewhere beneath the cynical undergrowth of your shoot-'em-up-fed subconscious, you'll probably love it too. This time the action's personal: Ratchet, alas, is something of an orphan to this universe. Like a certain superhero rocketed from his dying planet, Ratchet has no biological family to call his own, nor does he know from whence he came. Not even the little robot that constantly hangs out on his back can ease that kind of loneliness, apparently. If that wasn't bad enough, a nasty sort going by the name of Emperor Percival Tachyon has a bit of a hard mad-on for the Lombax history too. In fact, he's out to destroy the universe's last remaining Lombax. That's you, Ratchet. Tachyon also reckons that an ancient weapon dubbed the 'Lombax Secret' might have a good chance of doing him some harm, and he ain't happy. So, as you might expect, a nefarious horde of nasties are on the case. You don't get to call yourself 'Emperor' without having an army of uglies at your disposal, after all. You'll find all the classic elements of Ratchet & Clank present and accounted for, with more crazy weapons than ever, animation on a par with Hollywood CGI films and a healthy dose of next-gen goodness. |

inFamous (PS3) $12.99 inFamous, like so many other games, is set in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future. What sets inFamous apart from those other games is that in inFamous, you have the power of electricity at your fingertips. NO! Not like being able to flick a light-switch. In inFamous, you have real power, and as we all know, real power corrupts. In the game, you (playing bike messenger Cole McGrath) have to navigate around the ruins of Empire City. The city is in ruins due to an explosion that happened to be caused by a package you were carrying. After the explosion, the city falls into chaos as the cops pull out and leave the gangs to take over. Federal government claims to have the situation in control, but in reality, they have blocked exit to the city in the name of "quarantine". The gangs have mutated into powerful murderous creatures. On top of all this, your girlfriend's sister was killed in the blast, and she blames you. And your picture is being broadcast as one of the terrorists that caused the whole mess. The only upside to all this is that, like the gangs, you seem to have mutated too. You now have the power to shoot lightning bolts from your hands. You can shoot a blast wave from your hands too. As you progress through the game, re-activating the power grid in the city, your powers develop, enabling you to glide along power lines or to throw shock grenades. After teaming up with the mysterious Moya, you must track down the cause of the explosion, and make sure the awesome weapon is kept out of the wrong hands. Your task is made all the more difficult by the hordes of gang members, but the public is against you too... at least at first. Whether things remain that way is up to you, since the game has a Karma system that enables you to make "good" or "bad" choices at vital points. Travel around the city is via one of the most fluid and fun "parkour" style systems we've yet seen. The roof running, wall climbing and jumping is simple and intuitive, and it enables you to use the sprawling open-environment of the city to full effect. A massive explosion rips through six square blocks of Empire City, levelling everything and everyone in its path. At the centre of the blast crater a lone man stands up miraculously unharmed, gifted with incredible powers. Experience what happens when a real person suddenly starts developing superpowers. Will you exact revenge or protect the innocent - or maybe a little of both? These are the situations you'll face as you play inside a richly interactive and organic living city, a place where your actions create broader reactions in the citizens and landscape around you. inFamous lets you unravel an evolving mystery, experience fame and/or infamy and battle powerful, iconic villains, all the while giving you the feeling of becoming a modern day superhero. * Enjoy the ultimate freedom of harnessing fantastic powers and abilities that shape and define the world around you * Explore multiple powers throughout the gam |

PS3 Firmware 3.55 vs. PS3 Jailbreak
Sony has tried any kind of method to stop PS3 Jailbreaking since the first PS Jailbreak USB dongle was released in this summer. Now, apart from previous firmware 3.42/3.50, Sony has released the Firmware 3.55 on Dec 7 with the announcement – "This is a minor update that adds a security patch." But it has been confirmed that the firmware 3.55 disable the PS downgrade and jailbreak.
Let's have a brief review on recent PS3 Jailbreaking. Sony has already updated the firmware version to 3.42 in Sep, which is a mandatory updating against PS Jailbreak dongle. The most fatal move is to make the new games need to run on the newest firmware, which keeps the PS3 homebrew gamers away from the game GT5. Next, the firmware 3.50 with the support for Blu-ray 3D Disc Playback also updated.
In the early Nov, the hackers who released the PS Jailbreak dongle hit back. They announced on their official website that they have successfully hacked PS3 by downgrading the firmware 3.50/3.42 to the previous version. And then gamers can use the PS Jailbreak USB dongle to play homebrews on their PS3 game consoles.
Not long after PS3 Firmware 3.50 was compromised by PS Downgrade, another hacker team X3 released a video to show that their victory on jailbreaking Firmware 3.50 with their X3 Max USB dongle in last weekend, which allows PS3 to run homebrews on the firmware 3.50. The exploit is significant, because unlike the PS Downgrade dongle, it was allegedly run homebrews on the PS3 game console without downgrading it. They also announced that X3 Max USB dongle can let users update to the latest hacked software freely, but the update one hasn't announced yet.
However, that is another story now. It's definitely no doubt that the firmware 3.55 is released against the newly PS Downgrade and jailbreak.
It has been confirmed that gamers can use PS Downgrade to enter the Factor/Service mode. "The system continues to boot into Factory/Service mode, even with the modified 3.41 PUP and the first Lv2diag.self file loaded alone on a USB drive," said Greg from PS3-Hacks.com. However, the next steps 5 to 10 (referring to the tutorial here) are unavailable, and the system has no response to the first lv2diag.self file. It indicates that gamers can not (currently) downgrade from firmware 3.55 in the Factor/Service mode. Fortunately, Sony PS3 system has response to the second lv2diag.self file which allows PS3 system to exit from the Factor/Service mode to the retail mode.
A few forums also showed that proxys are working against it currently, yet might be unavailable soon once Sony confirmed that the firmware has no major bugs. At present, there is no way to downgrade firmware 3.55. Gamers who want to run homebrew applications are stuck with no PSN access again if they still choose to wait for the future PS3 jailbreaking instead of installing the firmware 3.55. Therefore, Sony gains the upper hand temporarily. While hackers will never stop, the hacking of PS3 will continue.
