UEFA Euro 2008 (PS3) $1.99 UEFA Euro 2008 is the inevitable EA Sports tie-in for the summer soccer tournament taking place in Austria and Switzerland. Like your above average EA football title, the game features uncannily lifelike visual representations of the world's best players, playing in what the developer claims is a more accessible, quicker-paced and more responsive version of the EA SPORTS football engine, and all of the teams and official stadiums that will be part of UEFA Euro 2008 finals. UEFA Euro 2008 invites you to take on the challenge of leading one of 50-plus European national teams to the finals as the game recreates all of the excitement and drama of the official tournament. Play as any European country from the earliest qualifying rounds all the way through to a faithful virtual reproduction of the championship finals. A new game mode called Captain Your Country enables gamers put themselves on the pitch and wear the shirt of their national team. Working through eight status levels can lead to you earning the captaincy of your team, and then you can lead your team into battle for championship glory against your European opponents. If you're well connected, you can go online in the Battle of the Nations mode to earn status points as an individual and for your country in the quest for global supremacy. UEFA Euro 2008 isn't strictly about summer in central Europe. The game captures the filthy, dirty weather conditions of Tirana, Albania in the mid-qualification rounds, and the look and feel of freshly-laid pitches in the more affluent parts of Europe before the ravages of say, a Slovakian winter have taken their toll. The mud and the rain really do impact the playing conditions. Real-time player ratings change based on individual performance, and there's a penalty kick shoot-out mode to recreate the agony and the ecstasy of ooh, let's say, England versus Portugal. Those who know their recent football history will know what we mean. |

Beijing 2008 (PS3) $9.99 The Olympics – competition of champions! They might have been around since the ancient world was less ancient, but this is the first time they've been around with all of 2008's accumulated knowledge to spare you the effort of tortuous training to get involved. To go with the games in Beijing, SEGA has Beijing 2008 to save you the hassle of ever having to leave your house as you prove your worth against the world's finest athletes. There are a whopping 38 events to try your hand at, ranging from the usual staples such as the 100m sprint to less recognised events such as Judo. Much thought has been given to dodging the usual button-mashing mechanics of track and field events. In the 100m, for example, a new start block mechanic has been introduced that makes use of the trigger buttons to get you on your way. The game features several modes, including the requisite training mode and the option to set up custom competitions. There's also the 'Olympics' mode, in which players must rank highly enough in events to progress. As you go, you'll be able to customise who's on your team, swapping different athletes in and out as you see fit. |

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PS3) $1.99 With the Pro Evolution Soccer series renowned for its fluid, realistic gameplay, the new game builds on the implementation of Teamvision with additional key advances. As with previous releases since its inception in 1996, the ball is again treated as a separate entity, with the timing of shots entirely down to the player, while the new AI ensures that defenders work to close down space and block efforts on goal. Similarly, distribution of passes works along the same lines, with players using the space available to them to switch the ball. Close control has also been enhanced with more control when dribbling the ball, and a number of subtle moves added to bypass defenders and move the ball into space. Working in conjunction with the Teamvision system, every aspect of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008’s on-field play has been reworked and fine-tuned to create the balanced and strategic play of a high stakes match. Set-pieces have been improved, with full control given over the number of players and the position of the defensive wall. A wider range of set piece options are also available to make use of specific talents within the team. |

Turok (PS3) $9.99 An ex-member of Wolf Pack, the most ruthless Black Ops squad around, Joseph Turok is charged with capturing and detaining his former colleague and mentor Roland Kane from his fortress on a backwater planet. Trouble is, this planet has been genetically altered, and after Turok's ship is shot down on approaching the planet, he has to use every ounce of nous and bravery to evade the armies of highly-trained soldiers in the first place. The massive insects and myriad ravenous dinosaurs have to be dealt with too! Sure enough, Turok for 2008 comes with a single-player option dubbed Story Mode, but the game also boasts fantastic online multiplayer features with a selection of modes and maps for between 2 and 16 players. There are 10 multiplayer maps in all, including seven competitive maps and three cooperative-specific missions. Competitive multiplayer modes include Capture the Flag, Assault-style Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and War Games, a special objective-based game mode. Turok's co-op feature allows up to four players to team up online in maps inspired by the single-player story but designed specifically for the co-op mode. Unique to Turok, and like the game's single-player campaign, the multiplayer modes include dinosaurs and large insects, which may attack any player and can be lured to attack opponents. The game is powered by the much-admired Unreal Technology software, thus making it a first-person shooter with great pedigree and no little style. It may be light on the bad language, and not too bloody and gory, but there's plenty of ultraviolence on offer in Turok. If you harbour a dislike for dinosaurs, genuinely smart soldiers and huge insects, fall in line with 2008's Turok. |

Madden NFL 09 (PS3) $4.99 20 years ago, the Madden NFL game entered the arena, bringing authentic football action and an in-depth 'by the playbook' approach to the game. In 2008, the series celebrates its 20th anniversary with Madden NFL 09: two decades of innovation - and especially in the case of the PS3 and 360, sumptuous visuals - bring a whole new level of wholly enjoyable and fulfilling gameplay. The legend is back with a bang. Madden NFL 09 promises the most complete American Football package in its 20 year-long history. Whether you're new to the game, or something of a Gridiron veteran, you will enjoy a unique yet challenging experience, as Madden NFL 09 is the first sports game that adapts to you, courtesy of the innovative Adaptive Difficulty Engine, which tailors the game to match your playing style. You can improve your game with the brand new virtual Training Center (that's American for 'Centre', folks) where your players are represented in a holographic style, or get instant feedback with EA Sports BackTrack, a facility that allows you to learn from your mistakes in-game. There's new televisual-type presentation with Cris Collinsworth and Tom Hammond commentating on the play, online leagues for up to 32 teams, and a whopping 85-plus new features and enhancements. The Total Control animation system invites you to execute plays and celebrations to surprise and no doubt bamboozle and infuriate the opposition, human or otherwise. |

dark Sector (PS3) $4.99 It's been a long road getting to the publication of Dark Sector. It was announced by Digital Extremes way back in the heady days of 2004, back when the PS3 was a glimmer on the horizon. It's been that long coming. Four years on, and the year 2008 sees the release of the game in partnership with D3 Publisher of Europe. This third-person shooter has much in common with Gears of War in its cover system, forcing you to run from one spot to another or watch your brains decorate the wall. If you're going to spend your hard earned cash on Dark Sector, however, it won't be for just another third-person shooter. Nope, you'll be buying it for the glaive. 'The what now!?' you may well cry. Probably best for a bit of plot at this point. Players take on the role of Hayden Tenno, a special agent dispatched to a small former-USSR country named Lasria to take care of a nasty chap going by the name of Mezner. Mezner, you see, has gone and got his paws on a chemical weapon that has folk into all sorts of nasty, monstrous types with strange abilities. Not far into the mission, however, he gets exposed to the weapon and finds himself with a metal-like arm. A bladed disc grows out of his arm, and lo and behold, you have the glaive. The glaive can do all sorts of wonderful things. As well as being thrown for a spot of decapitation, it can be used for things like stealing fire, ice and electricity and then hurling them at your opponents. As you progress through the game, the number of abilities the glaive gives you will keep on trundling upwards. As you'd expect from any shooter in the age of the wonderful Interweb, Dark Sector comes complete with a multiplayer mode, supported either online or over LAN. |

Madden NFL 08 (PS3) $4.99 The world's most reliable and relied-upon American Football videogame is back and, certain people say, better than ever for 2007 in the shape of Madden NFL 2008. Never one to shy away from updates and tweaks for its games, EA has surely surpassed itself this time around. Yes, there's a football game behind and beyond the EA Sports glitz, but goodness, the developer has really thrown its lot in with this iteration. Let's have a closer look at what's in store... There's an all-new 'Read and React' system which enables you to scan the field and identify individual strengths and weaknesses before every play. You can play to your team's strengths by immediately seeing what your opponent has planned and you can react as soon as the ball is snapped. Improved player intelligence provides more authentic gameplay on both sides of the ball, and you can stay on the field after every game to work on specific aspects of your game in Skill Drills mode. There's also a new Fantasy Challenge mode, in which you can apply your knowledge of the game to draft a dream football team, and go for elite superstars to add to your roster of key players. All-new player moves, including auto-motion and low-hitting tackles, plus ultra-smooth gameplay provide the most realistic NFL gaming experience ever. |

WWE Smackdown! Vs. RAW 2008 Featuring ECW (PS3) $1.99 Wrestling, it's just a bunch of big men in pants brushing and touching each other isn't it? Er, and slamming each other into tables. Well, however hardcore and manly it is, it still commands a lot of respect worldwide - the WWE Smackdown series has seen great success since its debut on the PlayStation all those years ago, and although we're no longer treated to the likes of Kurt Angle and The Rock, many love to sit and watch the drama unfold on the canvas and play the latest games. There are closer ties with the WWE corporation itself for the game this time around, with writers for the TV shows creating various scripts for the game and wrestling stars getting involved with motion capture and representation of their personalities on screen. There is the introduction of 'fighting styles' too - a list of eight personalities and attributes, one of which is given to each wrestler to feel different from each other. Before there wasn't much call between playing as Rey Mysterio or Big Show - now the two feel like worlds apart. Wrestlers designated as 'High Flyers' have a lot of speed and agility, allowing for your character to roll out of tight situations, use the ropes more effectively and to set a 'pin trap' which will reverse any pin made by your opponent. On the other hand, a 'Powerhouse' style will always rely on strength - if a wrestler's arms aren't damaged, they can always break out of a pin, allowing for some strategic play against different fighting styles. 'Powerhouses' also have a Rampage meter, which allows the fighter to become invincible and deal extra damage when full. Oiled up men, tiny pants and oodles of body slamming. What's not to love? |
