Whats wrong with my 40gb PS3?

So i get home one day, and turn on my ps3. then a yellow light starts flashing. so i got the YLOD. But then, the fan started acting up, and getting really loud. Then the whole system shut down. NO POWER at all! Sony is charging 200 maybe more, and if they cant fix it, they still keep the money. So im not going to do that. But i would like to know whats wrong with it.
FACTS:
40gb version
4 years old.
had it for a year and a half, i bought it off ebay.
Ive taken good care of it.

you may have taken good care of it, but the previous owner may not have. if sony is charging money to fix it, then chances are they'll fix it. if they can't, then they'll refund the money. they might not replace it since 1) they don't make the 40 gig model anymore, and 2) the warranty has expired anyways.

if they really are charging 200 dollars, then i'd just spring for the new 80 gig. it's only 100 dollars more.

oh, and YLOD just indicated hardware error. unless you are familiar with the ps3, it'd be really hard to pinpoint the exact problem
