Downloading Movies Today - Is It The Still The Same Great Movie Experience?
We take forgranted the mega quality image, the immaculate costumes, the professional editing, the stunts, the visual effects and the location, we hopefully are lost in the telling of the tale.
With the prevalence of large screen tvs, the home cinema experience is here. At last the cinema comes to life with life size actors, sizzling action scenes and a blaze of realistic colour on our new big screen LCD, Plasma and LED tvs.
until recently tv failed miserably in comparison to the cinema. Now everyone can have the latest epic, thriller, chiller and love story, by simply clicking 'download' on the laptop. The early jerky movies in low definition and with awful sound and picture coordination have gone. Most households have sufficiently fast internet connections, which will download and in a lot of cases play or 'stream' in real time the movies of your choice. Higher quality can be achieved by downloading at a slower speed, saving to disc and playing later.
There are a number of 'devices' or electronic boxes which will play DVD or streamed video files, not just the PC and laptop but some handheld mobiles, games machines and pda devices have the necessary memory to record and play full length films. The latest playstation by Sony for example will play blue ray discs and is capable of downloading movies from the extensive Sony store. Modern satellite receivers like the CubeRevo have network connections and can stream video to and from their external or internal hard disk drives making it possible to see downloaded movies without actually having a full spec 'media centre' in the living room.
Movies are big business. I remember when a trip to the movie theater was a special event for us, as a child I still recall the queue for Mary Poppins at the Gaumont cinema in town. Taking my own children it seems less of an event somehow, the on screen special effects dominate the telling of the story. Maybe I'm behind the times but I dont always follow the story these days, the camera tricks I feel are just there to get our impressionable youngsters in the audience.
There are so many films around, all described as blockbusters and having many stars in the cast, it is such a disappointment when the plot is so poor, or told so badly. I am sure a lot of the films today are just 'making up the numbers' needed to supply the very great demand. The number of ways of watching films today are so diverse, that the few really good movies that are made simply wouldnt fill the monthly slots available. How many times have you tried to pick a movie on Satellite tv and found every one in the list already seen.
A lot of what makes a good film is in the casting, there are very few really bad films made by the top stars. If you pick a film you dont know, from a list of Robert de Niro or Tom Cruises productions, chances are you wont be disappointed. Finding a good new film with an unknown cast is way more difficult. The chances are that without the big stars the film makers wont have a very big budget from the films backers so dont expect much in the way of special effects from a sci fi production, though a drama or clever mystery story might come through ok.
