Godzilla 2000 $12.7 Following Roland Emmerich's controversial Americanization of the Japanese monster icon in Godzilla (1998), the Beast from the East comes roaring back in this sci-fi adventure tale. Yuji Shinoda (Naomi Nishida), a scientist devoted to researching Godzilla, is setting up equipment on a fog-shrouded peninsula with her daughter Io (Mayu Suzuki) and journalist Yuki Ichinose (Takehiro Murata) when everyone's favorite 180-foot-tall lizard appears from the sea and begins laying siege to a nuclear power plant. The military swings into action, but the monster's fiery breath soon uncovers an alien spacecraft; beings from outer space have come to take over the earth, and now Godzilla is our last line of defense against them. Hugely successful in Japan, Gojira Mireniamu (aka Godzilla 2000) was the first Japanese Godzilla movie since Godzilla 1985 to receive a US theatrical release. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Prediction Network). They are the good guys, making the CCI (Crisis Control Intelligence), headed up by a hilariously nihilistic Katagiri (Hiroshi Abe), the bad guys. Takao Okawara's GODZILLA 2000 is perfectly consistent with its predecessors: the monsters are nasty and ferocious and they wipe out every skyscraper in Tokyo, literally leveling the city. The film brings back all the old tricks, with special effects akin to the Godzilla films of yore and plenty of monster mania. |

Godzilla (1998) $12.7 Dedicated to Tomoyuki Tanaka (1910-1997), who produced the 1954 original and sequels, the Devlin/Emmerich interpretation displays a redesign of Godzilla, now a large lizard mutated after fallout from French nuclear tests. A blinding flash of white light fills the Eastern sky. Thousands of miles away, the Pacific Ocean churns, engulfing a freighter. On another part of the globe, giant footsteps plow a path through miles of Panamanian forests, Tahitian villages, and Jamaican beaches. In the Ukraine, biologist Dr. Niko Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick), with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is examining the impact of radiation on Chernobyl earthworms. Colonel Hicks (Kevin Dunn) and a military team escort Niko to check out giant claw marks on the beached freighter; they're joined by paleontologists Elsie Chapman (Vicki Lewis) and Mendel Craven (Malcolm Danare). Blood and giant-size footprints indicate some sort of enormous reptile. French secret agent Philippe Roache talks to the freighter's only survivor, who keeps repeating, Gojira...Gojira. Tatopoulos et al arrive in Manhattan's Fulton Fish Market where Godzilla surfaces, moving on to the NYC financial district where Mayor Ebert (Michael Lerner) is speaking. Ambitious Audrey Timmonds (Maria Pitillo), who works for TV news anchor Charles Caiman (Harry Shearer), is Niko's former girlfriend, and she uses this to her professional advantage. As the wave of destruction continues, Niko and Roache track the creature through the evacuated city and discover Godzilla's eggs about to hatch in Madison Square Garden. They are followed by Audrey and TV cameraman Victor Animal Palotti (Hank Azaria), and soon the hatching Godzilla offspring prowl the Garden corridors, leading to a final showdown. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi |

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II $12.7 Everyone's favorite big lizard gets ready to rumble in this sci-fi monsterfest. On Monster Island, an egg is discovered in the nest of Rodan, the giant pteradon, but when the people monitoring the island discover that a baby Godzilla has hatched, the United Nations' official Godzilla Task Force swings into action, capturing the little guy and keeping him in captivity. Needless to say, Godzilla is upset to discover that Junior is missing, and he and Rodan set out to find the youngster. However, as the monsters leave a path of destruction in their wake, they discover that a formidable foe awaits them -- MechaGodzilla, a seemingly indestructible mechanical monster made of steel. Acclaimed by fans as one of the best of the second-generation Godzilla epics, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla was directed by Takao Okawara, who got his start in filmmaking as assistant director on Godzilla 1985. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Guide |

Mario: A True Video Game Classic
Nintendo's Mario franchise is based on one of the video game world's most popular characters, Nintendo's mascot Mario, the overall-clad protagonist from the arcade classic, Donkey Kong. Mario was originally just called "Jumpman", but was renamed Mario after the angry landlord of Nintendo of America's warehouse. The games usually feature simple plots; the most common scenario is that in which Bowser, a Godzilla-like creature who is the game's serial villain, kidnaps Princess Peach. Mario (and sometimes his brother Luigi) is left to his own devices as he tries to rescue her.
Appropriate for All Ages
With colorful and child-like animation, and a game in which any "violence" is toned down to levels which will not alarm very young players, The Mario series has long been a favorite of both kids and the adults who monitor their gaming activity. Play involves Mario jumping on top of bad guys - causing them to burst - and collecting coins, sprites and mushrooms by hitting game blocks from below. Smiling yellow stars give Mario a short period of invincibility.
Variations on a Theme
Like almost all other video games, Mario also became a first-person game, with Mario Kart being one of the series' most popular games (over 50 million copies have been sold). In Mario Kart, Mario and other well-known characters, including the reptilian Bowser, are not involved in any preconceived plot line. Rather, the multi-player games offers players a number of race tracks around which they compete, driving high-powered go-carts. Driving through translucent crystals gives players benefits similar to those reflected in the 2-D platform.
With dozens of Mario games to choose from, online play has extended the Mario family to another generation entirely, as the Nintendo classic never seems to lose its appeal. Millions of downloads, most of them free of charge, have found their way into households around the world. Even in his late twenties, Mario leads the pace when it comes to video games that can be enjoyed by all.
