Burnout Revenge (Xbox 360) $13.95 Just think… incredibly enough, some gamers, somewhere will not have been exposed to Burnout Revenge on its previous release. Players whose first and only console was a 360 (are there really such beings!?) have waited for around four months to get involved, and can now get their mitts on the brute. What have they been missing? Blimey, where to start? Manna from heaven for those not sated by the Electronic Arts-ified Burnout Takedown from 2004, Revenge restates the case for BO's claim as the most insanely quick racing series. Truth told, in the initial gameplay, there's not a great deal of difference between Takedown and Revenge; even as far as an hour into the single-player game, the uptempo sounds of popular beat combos Yellowcard, Bloc Party and Dead 60s are the sole pointer as to the game's release date, what with EA being all up to date and hip to all the best new driving music. Ahem. Oh, the Revenge motif that keeps cropping up too - that's a giveaway. So, after an hour, we've made a hi-definition dent in more than a few shiny cars, and only a 3% impression in the game as a whole. We're no maths geniuses, but we reckon that could mean around 35-40 hours of solo gameplay, depending on how well you progress and whether you're satisfied with a merely 'good' performance and a bronze medal in any given event. Race events are plentiful: Race is as simple as it gets, as you take down rivals in a no-holds barred rampage to the finishing line; Traffic Attack invites you to beat time targets as you race through busy thoroughfares; Burning Lap is a beat the clock event; Road Rage gives you a time limit and a remit to take out as many rivals as possible; Eliminator is a last-man-standing event; Preview is a quick test drive of some ridiculously fast vehicles against the clock; and GP Race is a multi-race battle, the fastest of the lot. Through Xbox Live, the 'brand-new-for-360' Live Revenge feature tracks your rivals and calls out those that need some serious payback. Build up relationships with gamers that you take out, or take you down, and then let Live Revenge recall them and tell you how they are literally rubbing you up the wrong way. Burnout Revenge is about long memories and short tempers, especially on 360. Crash events are preceded by a fly-by crash-camera sequence from which you can plan a trail of destruction to score the maximum of points, and are an interesting diversion from the main game at best. The second iteration of Burnout (Point of Impact) still features - in our opinion - the ultimate version of the Crash event. Still, there's hours of fun to be had in both solo and multi-player modes. There's a World Tour campaign to take on, with its own Crash and Race events. It's all a bit too reminiscent of Burnout Takedown to be an absolutely essential purchase for those who still have the 2004 game in their possession, but to the few gamers who have resisted the franchis |

Dead Rising (Xbox 360) $10.95 In Dead Rising, gamers assume the role of Frank West, a freelance photojournalist constantly searching for the scoop of the century. In pursuit of a surefire lead, he makes his way to a small American town only to find it has been overrun by flesh-eating zombies. If anything, there seems to be more zombies inside the mall than outside. Dead Rising is set over a three day period and offers gamers the full reign of a realistic shopping centre (or mall, for the benefit of our American friends - Ed). It is up to you to help Frank find out who is behind this deadly epidemic. There are many different stores in the mall that offer players an endless supply of resources, including makeshift weapons, vehicles and much more. If you can pick an object up, you can use it has a weapon - there are over 250 items that will help create mayhem, including circular saws, skateboards, electric guitars and severed arms. It is important to remember that the zombies become more powerful by night. They may move like a snail with a limp throughout the day, but as the sun goes down they become faster and much more dangerous. There will be encounters with various survivors throughout the game and by helping them, you will glean important clues that will ultimately help Frank solve this horrendous puzzle. |

Dead to Rights: Retribution (Xbox 360) $10.95 One man and his dog. For video gamers of some history this does not bring to mind images of sheep herding in Barnet or anywhere else for that matter. These few words evoke the Dead to Rights franchise of action games. Yes, Dead to Rights: Retribution is a reboot for the Xbox 360 and PS3 that sees former vice-cop Jack Slate and his canine sidekick, Shadow, jump into the fray. Slate and Shadow are faced not only with the noirish, criminally infested and morally hideous environment of Grant City rendered by developers Volatile Games. Their task is a simple one, keep themselves alive while ridding the city of bad-doers. The key to Dead to Rights has always been the interaction between Slate and Shadow. Basically this means that the player gets to play (and destroy) with the both the man and the hound. In the newly rebooted version, Namco Bandai and Volatile have also introduced what they are calling a 'new hybrid combat system'. What could this mean? Simply, it means that the player can combine both third-person ranged weaponry with hand-to-hand combat, while also making use of Shadow's improved AI. In short, players will be able to use their guns to shoot enemies from a distance, take cover, blind fire, take human shields, steal enemies' weapons and also use Shadow in some mean take-down moves. Although there is something of a plot (clean up the city) by fighting the forces of the mysterious and most probably very evil indeed GAC organisation – the key to this game is teamwork. The next key to this game is kicking some bad-guy-behind with maximum impact. |

Supremacy MMA (Xbox 360) $9.99 505 Games has teamed up with developer Kung Fu Factory to bring Mixed Martial Arts to the console with Supremacy MMA. Kung Fu comes with enough development muscle to have had team members working on Ultimate Fighting Championship on the Dreamcast and the more up-to-date UFC Undisputed 2009. Not only does Supremacy MMA give the gamer all the attributes and skills to compete, it also introduces – for the first time in video gaming - female MMA fighters. Included in the roster alongside their male counterparts such as Jens Pulver (aka Lil' Evil) are “Lil Dog” Felice Herrig and Michele “Diablita” Gutierrez to bring some authentic feMMAle action. Other fighters included in the roster include Jack Saxon, a kickboxer called Dante; Ilya, a Russian wrestler, and a karate pro’ based heavily on Pulver’s arch-rival B.J. Penn but this time called Yuki Hashimoto. Combat arenas include the likes of a strip joint as well as a slaughterhouse. And in these dark and atmospheric environments each character must use their dedicated fighting styles not only to win but also to protect specficic body areas if they are going to retain their special moves. Also included to hype up the atmosphere of no-holds-barred combat is a soundtrack from cult label Victory Records. Artists and songs from the label include: Destrophy - “Reconnect” Taproot - “Stolage” Bury Your Dead - “Broken Body” Emmure - “10 Signs You Should Leave” Within the Ruins - “Invade”, “Versus”, “The Carouser”, “Ataxia”, “Roads” |

Dead Rising 2 (Xbox 360) $10.91 In Dead Rising, as the name suggests, players took the role of Frank West, a photographer fighting to contain an outbreak of a Zombie virus in the backwater burg of Wilamette. Now, two years later, it is clear that Frank was not completely successful, and Zombiefication has been occurring all over the United States. Dead Rising 2 delivers more of the action adventure/survival horror thrills of the first game. Dead Rising 2 has as its main protagonist Chuck Greene, a star Motocross Rider, and as a result the photography aspects of the first game are gone, but the rest of the gameplay remains similar - a mission-based zombie slaying fest. The game is set in Fortune City - a fictional pleasure capital, reminiscent of Las Vegas. Dead Rising kept players' pulses racing by forcing them to adapt anything they could lay their hands on as weapons to defeat the zombie horde. Dead Rising takes the same route, but ups the ante with exciting new environments, more zombies to be killed and more blood than ever seen before. This being a gaming city, there's plenty at hand to use to attack the undead - baseball bats, electric guitars, even roulette wheels and slot machines can all be used in your defence. There are more creative weapons too, a moose head can be worn and used to barge zombies out of the way, a drill bucket combines three power drills and a bucket to make a very uncomfortable item of headwear. The paddle saw is a broom handle with a chainsaw at each end - imagine how much carnage that could cause. While the engine for Dead Rising could draw 500 Zombies at once, the new game can manage a staggering 7,000 zombies on screen at one time. And it's your job to kill them, which you can do by ploughing through them in vehicles for maximum carnage. Dead Rising 2 delivers the most intense zombie slaying gaming experience ever seen. |
