Does this product work to connect my xbox 360 to live without paying for the expensive microsoft adapter?

Technically, yes, but I dont think it's worth it at all. You're better off using a laptop if you have one.
To connect with a laptop, you have a to create a network bridge.
To do this:go to control panel and select network connections, right click the wireless connection(your internet source) and thenclick properties. Click on the advanced tab and check the box "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection". and then in the drop box, select your Xbox connection (it should be called Local Area Connection)
and if that doesn't work, then highlight both connections and right-click on one of the icons, click bridge connections.
