Condemned (Xbox 360) $8.95 Monolith Productions is garnering some highly enthusiastic attention at the moment. The team behind the warmly received No One Lives Forever has been in the press again recently following the release of the psychological shock shooter F.E.A.R. And the release of the Xbox 360 was just the excuse for a console foray after years of specialising in the PC end of the gaming scene. Teaming up with SEGA’s American arm they bring you Condemned: Criminal Origins. Continuing the developer’s current penchant for the darker side of things, Condemned puts you in the well-polished brogues of FBI Agent Thomas, whose chosen field is the study, pursuit and capture of serial killers. Track these death-worshipping humans like the animals they are through their preferred habitat – mazes of broken windows, crumbling brickwork and dilapidated tenements. Your long-developed skills as a detective and a range of precision forensic tools will help you, but you’ll have to rely just as much on split second reactions and brawling skills if you are to get out of your mission in one piece. Monolith made its name showing what could be done on games running through Windows, at a time when nobody believed in a DOS-less future for PC gaming. This technical expertise is brought to bear on the latest Microsoft confection, the 360, with lighting, texture mapping and filtering techniques employed that are like nothing you’ll have seen this generation. The first person viewpoint that Monolith favours is used, but this is still an adventure game where you execute melee moves on your quarries, as well as pick up and throw a variety of inanimate objects. Full compatibility with 5:1 surround sound will allow you to take advantage of your home movie set-up, and sophisticated and reactive enemy AI completes the package, making Condemned a suitable tech fest for a debut on such an able machine. You also get, as is the vogue these days, an involving plot with twists a plenty to keep you interested. If your new Xbox 360 has just joined an already impressive array of high-end entertainment technology in your front room, here’s just the thing to put your new setup through its paces. |

Carnival Games: In Action (Xbox 360) $24.99 Carnival Games:In Action was built from the ground up to take full advantage of the innovative technology in Kinect for Xbox 360. Five theme-park style alleyways -- from Coaster Corner to Whirligig Way -- set the stage for gamers to swing away in the batting cage, avoid twisting tornadoes in the Hot Air Balloon Race, take a galactic journey to the red planet in Rocket to Mars and much more. All manner of interactive prizes and surprises are abound, including pet dragons, robot cowboys, flying bears and ninja masks. In addition, Kinect for Xbox 360’s voice recognition technology allows The Amazing Wodin, a wily wizard with a weakness for wit, to advise players of their future. NHL 2K7 (Xbox 360) $2.99 NHL 2K7 for the 360 is the 2006 offering in 2K's Ice Hockey series and is a must-buy for any fans of the sport or Ice Hockey videogames. The game has breathtaking next generation graphics that the publishers 2K Sports have imaginatively entitled Cinemotion. You could be forgiven for believing that you were actually watching the game live on television with the amazing presentation. All-new crossover, gliding, turning and puck handling animations deliver a new look and feel to gameplay. Another new feature of the game is ProControl. This is where the right analog controls have been expanded to bring a far deeper level of action to the ice with improved passing and shooting mechanics. A new chemistry system has been introduced to NHL 2K7. The system mirrors today's NHL, as division rivalries heat up and home advantage really does make a difference. Both factors make the game by far the most realistic in the series. Audio Intuition is another feature which adds realism to proceedings. On-ice communication (which is, it must be said, mostly shouting) plays a key role in every game, as coaches and players call out offensive opportunities and critical defensive situations. NHL 2K7 for the Xbox 360 is a great game which has a depth of realism not yet seen in other games of this genre. If you are a fan of the sport or Ice Hockey games in general, then you should be more than happy with NHL 2K7. |

Rockstar Presents Table Tennis (Xbox 360) $3.99 Rockstar serves up a pure videogaming treat with Table Tennis. Indeed, our thumbs hurt so much from playing this game that it’s actually painful for us to type these few laudatory words to tell you why you should buy and play this game with your friends as soon as you possibly can. In fact, we’ll go one step further. We’ll even say that should you have withheld buying an Xbox 360 up to this point - for whatever reason - be you a Microsoft-hater or just plain skint: this game is the reason for you to go out and buy, beg or steal one. It really is that good. It’s like videogames used to be. It’s the kind of game that you and your friends will tan the ar*e off for months to come. This game will be spoken about in ten years time, just as men in their thirties now who should really know better, speak about Kick Off 2 or Sensible Soccer or Speedball 2. It is pure multiplayer videogaming joy. And unlike the aforementioned games, it also has the extra added bonus of being a truly beautiful-looking game. The numerous characters and their little dances of glory, the beautifully rendered stadia and the many other attention to graphical detail touches in the game are a joy to look at (which you never really could say for Sensi or Kick Off 2!). And the many extra little touches in the game, such as the perfectly executed music and oh-so-subtle audio touches (such as when the ball just tickles the net) really top off the overall experience. Really, after playing this game for a good few days in single player mode, or against the odd friend who wandered into our lair, we thought we had almost experienced the full amount of ping pong joy that the Rockstar San Diego guys had engineered for us. Then we played it online, and a whole new world of joy arrived courtesy of Xbox Live. Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis is perhaps one of the greatest online videogame experiences yet devised by man. If you are not, or have never been, particularly interested in online role-playing games, first person shooters or beat-em-ups, then this is the game to entice you into the online future. Why is the game so fiendishly addictive? It is because the controls are very simple to pick up yet deviously difficult to master. Anyone can play the game. Few can reach ping pong ninja status. But as you try to better your game, you really get involved in the flow of the play, just like you do in real ping pong. You might even be totally talentless, but even so, now and then you will show a flash of brilliance, which keeps you interested in the game. There are perhaps a few minor gripes about the game, which seems almost criminal to even mention. The movement of the actual characters is sluggish, but then, it’s not about the character movement (this is not Virtua Tennis, nor is it trying to be): it’s all about the movement and flow of the ball, and of the arm, and the spin off the bat. Totally immersive, hugely enjoyable Zen-like videogaming bliss. Buy it. Play it. Smile. |

The Godfather (Xbox 360) $13.95 One of the few liberties developer Electronic Arts has taken with this long-awaited game smacks you in the chops right from the start. Al Pacino's character Michael Corleone (the most important character in the movie after Don Vito Corleone) is not present. The Godfather puts you in the role of a character that did not feature in the film at all. With the packaging and all the hype surrounding the release of The Godfather, you would be wrong in believing it's all so-o-o authentic. The Xbox 360 version of The Godfather has had numerous enhancements and additions made to the gameplay. There is an enhanced BlackHand Control combat system, where you can punch, kick, grab and even choke an adversary with a stranglehold. Other exclusive enhancements made to this version of The Godfather include racket truck heists, extortions, targeting and living world gameplay. Several 360-exclusive missions and contract hits, new venues, a new family compound and much more interaction with key characters are all new additions to The Godfather for the Xbox 360. The game begins with your character witnessing his father being gunned down and murdered by rival gangsters. You are then thrust forward nine years into the future to the wedding scene from the opening of the film (at last, something familiar) where your mother is asking Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) to take you under his wing and offer you work. The Don sends his Capo, Luca Brasi to look after you and train you in the fine art of being a mobster. You are then taken to what EA call the 'Mob Face' part of the game, where you can customise how your character will look (face, hair and clothes etc.). The tools used in this section are very similar to those found in all EA Sports games. Now your character has taken shape, you begin as an unofficial enforcer for the Corleone family, which means your job is to muscle merchants into paying you protection money. Extorting businesses and taking over rackets is not all there is to the game, though. There are plenty of story missions to keep you occupied. Some missions are taken directly from the movie. You will have to drive the Don to the hospital after he is shot in the street, travel to Hollywood to re-enact the famous horse's head scene, and plant the pistol for Michael Corleone to use to kill Salazzo, to name but a few. In addition to the characters, the city of New York has been carefully rendered in detail, and you can spot specific scenes from the film as you travel the streets of Little Italy, Brooklyn, Midtown, Hell's Kitchen, and New Jersey. For the most part, the game has remained faithful to the legendary movie. Only after making a name for yourself will you move up the family ladder, starting from 'Outsider', and the game is completed when you become the Don of New York City, ruling over the other New York families (Tattaglia, Stracci, Cuneo and Barzini). |

The Outfit (Xbox 360) $10.95 The Outfit is an explosive third-person WWII title combining intense squad-based combat with the the freedom of total destruction to capture the intensity of war. It's also a significant technical development on previous action/shooter games with a number of new, never-before-seen features sure to whet the appetite of any war-gaming aficionado. As you progress through the game and complete mission objectives, you earn field units (FUs) that can be used on the fly to call-in 'Destruction on Demand' – this is heavy weaponry air-dropped into the action at any time, including tanks, jeeps, half-tracks and other combat vehicles through to machine gun nests, anti-tank emplacements, squad reinforcements, air strikes and artillery strikes on enemy targets. The Outfit features fully interactive and fully destructible environments, which gives you the freedom to shoot, blow up or demolish anything in the game. This baby lets you vent some serious pent-up anger! You can destroy buildings, bridges, walls and fences - everything can be levelled in your battle against the Nazi forces. The three fully playable squad leaders you can choose between each possess specific skills and abilities (i.e. close-combat specialist, heavy-arms specialist or anti-tank specialist.) Playing as one of these, you will lead a squad of battle-forged soldiers on a variety of combat missions - ranging from reconnaissance and rescue to search and destroy. With automated squad AI, your squad will act like a highly trained infantry unit that responds to actions as well as dynamic battlefield situations - laying down suppressing or covering fire, taking cover or rushing enemy positions. You can experience the ‘cinematic intensity’ of WWII combat through 12 epic single-player missions or online with Xbox Live for a variety of multiplayer modes, including co-op. |

Perfect Dark Zero (Xbox 360) $10.95 Sequels are big business in the games industry. Once a studio hits on a successful idea, there’s often a lot of pressure from publishers to continue the winning formula. And while some people like to bring out a sequel every year, others spend an age getting just one ready. Rare have spent five and a half years on the sequel to Perfect Dark on the N64. Itself a spiritual sequel to the dearly beloved Goldeneye, Perfect Dark won the hearts of hardened 'Goldenistas' with hugely customisable multiplayer modes and a fun story mode that even supported two player co-operative play. Since then, a sequel has been slated for GameCube; then - following the Microsoft buy-out - for Xbox. With the perfectionists at Rare unable to keep their hands off it, it slipped again to Xbox 360. But perhaps this is a blessing, and Perfect Dark Zero standing proudly shoulder to shoulder with its comrades in the Xbox 360 launch line-up is a stirring sight. The story once again concerns itself with the adventures of svelte lovely Joanna Dark. As is increasingly common in this genre, the game is in fact a prequel to the well-loved original Perfect Dark and tells the story of how she entered the employ of the Carrington Institute as a trusted member of their corporate espionage division. Three years before the events depicted on N64, Joanna embarks on a mission for the first time with her bounty hunter ex-cop father. What follows are 13 episodes that show how Joanna cut her teeth during a particularly fierce flare-up between eternal enemies the Carrington Institute and dataDyne Corp. Get that catsuit nimble feeling of girlyness as you roll and skip round each stage, toting a satisfying array of chunky weaponry. Detractors of the first Perfect Dark said that the graphics were too ambitious - sometimes appearing a muddy mess. That’s not a criticism that the Xbox 360 version is going to face. PDZ already looks like something from the year 2020, ferchrissakes - handy, seeing as that's the setting for the game. With a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound facility and a big TV, the big guns look and sound...well, bigger than ever. The Limited Edition comes with a comic book, slipcase and bonus DVD - well worth the extra five brick. |
