The Meaning of Video Games $34.95 The Meaning of Video Games takes a textual studies approach to an increasingly important form of expression in today’s culture. It begins by assuming that video games are meaningful–not just as sociological or economic or cultural evidence, but in their own right, as cultural expressions worthy of scholarly attention. In this way, this book makes a contribution to the study of video games, but it also aims to enrich textual studies. Early video game studies scholars were quick to point out that a game should never be reduced to merely its "story" or narrative content and they rightly insist on the importance of studying games as games. But here Steven E. Jones demonstrates that textual studies–which grows historically out of ancient questions of textual recension, multiple versions, production, reproduction, and reception–can fruitfully be applied to the study of video games. Citing specific examples such as Myst and Lost , Katamari Damacy , Halo , Façade , Nintendo’s Wii , and Will Wright’s Spore , the book explores the ways in which textual studies concepts–authorial intention, textual variability and performance, the paratext, publishing history and the social text–can shed light on video games as more than formal systems. It treats video games as cultural forms of expression that are received as they are played, out in the world, where their meanings get made. |

Sex in Video Games $33.49 Since the first computer games became available, sex has played a role in some form. But with the release of games like Playboy: The Mansion, Leisure Suit Larry, and The Singles, sexual content has gained a firm foothold and for the first time, ventured into the mainstream. Even casual games like The Sims have started to rev things up a bit, and in on-line games, tales of cybering have become commonplace. This sexual revolution in games has generated intense scrutiny of the games industry by political watchdog groups and family-oriented organizations. And it has brought the importance of self-regulation and rating systems to the forefront of the industry. Seeking to understand this emerging trend, developers, publishers, retailers, and consumers are asking themselves: When is sex appropriate in a game? How far is too far? What will it mean for the product? For its distribution? For my company? For me? Do games with sexual content sell better? Are they generally profitable? So far, there are no definitive answers to these questions. Sex in Video Games provides insight into this issue and presents guidelines and answers by studying the history of sexual content use in games and within the industry itself. In addition, the book considers ethical issues, parental and retailer responsibility, and explores industry attempts at self-regulation, along with a growing concern about potential censorship. |

Best Ways to Store Computer Games
Video games are popular but can also be an expensive hobby to have. Games definitely are not cheap. So as not to waste your money, be sure to look after them correctly. Learn the best way to store your games and cases so that you can enjoy them for many years. These tips will help keep them in good order.
1. Get some shelves. Rather than having them all over the floor and tabletops, buy a dedicated shelf to store your games. Any sort of shelf will do as long as it is capable of holding a video game case in the upright position. Your local video game store will definitely have some game storage options to choose from. Furniture stores are another good source for potential shelving options. Just be sure to get the right size shelves for your needs - (you may be tempted to cram too many cases onto the shelves which may result in cracked cases and ruined games.)
2. Store the game in its case at all times. You should always store your games in their cases when they are not in use, this will help in maintaining your games and protecting them. You should always place your game disk back into their original cases as soon as you finish playing the game. If there is no case with the game, use a plastic or paper CD cover so the disk will not become scratched and unusable. Your local electronics store or video game store will have replacement cases to purchase too. Disks are vulnerable so cover them at all times to avoid scratching and dirt build-up.
3. Handle your games carefully. Always make sure that your hands are clean. Grease and dirt on hands from eating will go straight to the delicate surface of a video game, potentially ruining it. Wipe over the cases every now and then also, to remove any grime.
If one of your games needs to get cleaned, you may want to think about having a professional clean it. You may result in doing more harm than good if you wipe it down with a wet cloth. It is necessary to have your game cleaned the right way, the best way to ensure this is by allowing the game store to do it for you. For a few dollars, you can also get disks re-surfaced by professionals - it's much cheaper than having to replace the game.
4. Keep game instructions together with the game in a safe place. Any game you purchase will come with an instruction leaflet. Don't throw them out! There is bound to be some information that will be handy some day. Keep them all in the same place.
By having good storage and cleaning habits, your video game collection will keep its value for a lot longer. If you ever have the need to sell them, buyers will like the look of the near-new appearance of your games. You should really consider taking the time to store your video game collection in the proper way.
