Superstars V8 Racing (Xbox 360) $8.95 Superstars V8 Racing is developed by BlackBean games, and published by Codemasters, who have built much of their solid reputation on racing games. BlackBean is the company behind the successful SBK08 and MotoGP motorcycle racing games. So, their racing game pedigree is good. Superstars V8 is based on the V8 Supercars race championship based around V8-engined touring cars from companies such as BMW, Audi and Jaguar. The game is clearly based on the SBK09 engine, but with four wheeled vehicles replacing two-wheeled, and anyone who enjoyed that game is sure to enjoy this one too. Superstars V8 Racing follows the same approach as SBK09 - racers take part in a series of races across a series of race tracks all around the world. The tracks are accurately modelled on the real-world versions. The cars are accurately modelled too, and each one handles differently, matching the real-life handling characteristics of that particular make and model. Players can tune and configure their cars to match their personal driving preferences in order to get the best performance out of the powerful engines. Options give the game a selection of driving difficulties making it possible for new players to pick up and play with arcade style gameplay and handling. More advanced players can take part in a full driving championship season, competing in a series of races, with more simulation-style driving and handling. |

Project Gotham Racing 3 (Xbox 360) $5.99 There’s nothing clever about the current rash of street racing and showy driving. Well before all the pimping, before the Need for Speed Undergrounds and even before the Burnouts, we were all playing Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast. The people at Bizarre Creations learned about racing games making their successful F1 games for the PlayStation. MSR was a much more ground breaking kettle of fish, though, awarding players ‘kudos’ points for flashy driving as they raced through the streets of London Tokyo and San Francisco. It didn’t hurt that the soundtrack was written by Outrun music legend Richard Jacques either. As the Xbox eclipsed the poor, hard done by Dreamcast, it was decided that this was the ideal new home for Bizarre racing game. Two versions of the re-christened Project Gotham Racing came out for the Xbox, the second of which sported desirable Xbox Live! support. So it won’t surprise those browsing shelves filled with software for the new Xbox 360 console to see the supercar-emblazoned mush of Project Gotham 3 peeking mischievously out at them. If you’ve managed to miss the screenshots released on the internet throughout the year, take it from us that this is one beautiful, jaw-droppingly shiny and lovely videogame. Online and offline modes have been improved and expanded to allow you to tailor your racing experience. Select any one of the dreamy supercars on offer and get closer than ever to your mechanised icons. You’ll discover that every detail of the cars, down to the dashboards inside, is faithfully modelled. The cities are no less impressive, and your tour of the world takes you through photorealistic reconstructions of anywhere from New York to Tokyo. And of course there’s the good old kudos system, rewarding you at every turn for flamboyance and panache. Let’s not beat about the bush, PGR3 is the absolute must have 360 launch title and there’s just no arguing about it. |

Carnival Games: In Action (Xbox 360) $24.99 Carnival Games:In Action was built from the ground up to take full advantage of the innovative technology in Kinect for Xbox 360. Five theme-park style alleyways -- from Coaster Corner to Whirligig Way -- set the stage for gamers to swing away in the batting cage, avoid twisting tornadoes in the Hot Air Balloon Race, take a galactic journey to the red planet in Rocket to Mars and much more. Classic games like Alley Ball, Milk Bottle Throw and Wheel of Chance add to the family fun. All manner of interactive prizes and surprises are abound, including pet dragons, robot cowboys, flying bears and ninja masks. In addition, Kinect for Xbox 360’s voice recognition technology allows The Amazing Wodin, a wily wizard with a weakness for wit, to advise players of their future. Blur (Xbox 360) $9.99 When Bizarre Creations, the power-house behind the Project Gotham Racing series, releases a new racing game, it's time for all 360 owning, driving game fans to pay attention. But unlike the PGR games, Blur is available for PC and PS3 too. Before anyone saw the game, Blur had already created a buzz of anticipation due to a series of appropriately blurred, but beautiful screenshots that were released. In them, beautifully modelled cars fought fiercely for position in a series of beautifully lit urban driving locations. Basically, this is PRG5... But it's PGR with a nitrous boost. Twenty cars can take to the track at a time. The tracks are what we've come to expect from Bizarre Creations, beautifully modelled and fabulously detailed. But where PGR often held you back from the environment with barriers, Blur puts you right amongst it, to use and interact with as you jostle for position. Throw in weapons such as projectiles, energy waves that will knock opponents out of the way and EMPs that will disable enemy cars and you've got a bizarre mash-up of PGR and Mario Kart. In on-line modes, all twenty cars can be player controlled. And the gameplay is tied to a social network, so as you race, you'll meet and befriend other players, develop rivalries, even gain fans. And players can expand the game and the community by creating and sharing new game play modes. If you're looking for a more party based experience, up to four player can compete in local multi-player mode. |

MotoGP 09/10 (Xbox 360) $13.95 It's time for fans of two-wheeled racing to dust off their virtual leathers – MotoGP 09/10 is here with not one but two seasons for us to race through. Yes, that's two seasons. The game comes with all the '09 season content (tracks, bikes, riders, teams) in the box. The 2010 goodies will be along as DLC, which is good news for racing fans as it means we'll also be getting the new Moto2 bikes – the 600cc class. That also means it will come with the new Silverstone track. And there's more! That also means the new Balaton track out in Hungary, which will feature later on in the season, will be up for grabs. Plenty of new goodies for bike fans to get to grips with. Championship mode is the meat of the game - a recreation of the MotoGP 09/10 season. As you dive in, you can pick your favourite rider and bike from any of the classes (125cc, 250cc, MotoGP – 800cc). With the 250ccs you have to take a bit more care on your throttle control or the back end is likely to slide out a bit more. Further up the scale, the 800cc bike is all about taking great care on the throttle control. The bike can slide out a lot more easily and you really have to pay attention to the state of your tyres. If you're not getting the picture – developer Monumental Games has put a lot of work into the way different classes of bike handle. This year also marks the introduction of the racing line for... we'll say 'less seasoned riders'. That comes from the developers racing the track over and over again, generating the best lap line. If, however, you outdo the dev team, the line will update to your fastest line. That can be uploaded to the network and then downloaded by your friends, so you can show them all how to be the speediest of racers. Career mode is for the more thoughtful racer. In a nutshell it takes you through some of the finer points of management - it's about building your own team, gaining reputation and hiring staff into that team. The game also supports up to twenty players in online multiplayer – a number that the creators claims is a first for racing games. With two seasons and all those features to go at, there's plenty on offer for bike fans in MotoGP 09/10. |

F1 2010 (Xbox 360) $24.99 When the news broke that Codemasters had secured the license to the 2010 Formula 1 series game, smiles broke out as well. The reason being the track record for racing games already under the belt of development team at Codemasters Birmingham armed with the EGO game engine. This has already brought gamers such racing crackers as Colin McRae: DiRT 2 and Race Driver: GRID. Could the team turn work on high quality, bump'n'grind rally driving games into the kind of highly-detailed, precision F1 experience demanded by fans of the genre was the question. Well, with F1 2010 gamers having to take on four FIA world champions: Jenson Button, Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton in a range of game modes, the challenge has certainly been laid down. F1 2010 can be played in stand-alone single-player or online multiplayer modes, with both presenting dynamic weather conditions and, yes, actual car damage to make for a highly realistic experience. Newcomers can experience quick-fire, one-off races before trying to compete at the top level in full Grand Prix weekends on tracks such as Spa, Monza, Silverstone and Monaco. Also, for the first time in an F1 video game, gamers can drive the Singapore night race and sparkling new Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi. 200MPH and more, hardcore to new driver racing, in high definition, F1 2010 from Codemasters is all about the actual thrills, as well as the detail and under-the-hood finesse expected by F1 gamers. |

Burnout Paradise (Xbox 360) $13.95 If you think that driving fast cars at high speeds along traffic-filled streets and roads sounds like a recipe for a very large crash, you wouldn't be a million miles from the truth. In the Burnout series of games, those are your tasks; both driving fast and causing crashes. This anarchic blend of racing and destruction has been elevated to new heights with Burnout Paradise, the fifth release in the series for home consoles. Gone are the strictly regimented tracks and courses of previous games, replaced with a fully open city and environs that can be explored at will. The name of the city in Burnout Paradise is, as may be expected, Paradise City. With the strains of the Guns and Roses song (which kicks off another jam-packed Burnout soundtrack) playing in your ears you are dropped into your first car and let loose on the unsuspecting, but amazingly tolerant population. From there, the city is your oyster. You can burn around, getting into scrapes, finding jumps and shortcuts or smashing through billboards all day should you wish. When you are ready to race, you just have to pull up at any one of 120 sets of traffic lights and spin your wheels. You will then be entered into an event, Burning Routes replace Burning Laps from older games but the old favourite Road Rage is still there. New event types Stunt Run and Marked Man involve chaining insane stunts together and surviving an all-out assault by the other competitors. All of these events can be played on-line with either your friends or randomly matched strangers. You can also Freeburn around Paradise while online, setting and challenging stunt records like 'longest drive into oncoming traffic' or 'most near misses chained together'. Burnout Paradise offers an entire city to race around and an almost unlimited number of accidents to get involved in. Welcome to Paradise. |

Motion Sports (Xbox 360) $15.95 Microsoft's Xbox 360 “full body” controller, Kinect is getting plenty of support from Ubisoft. Motion Sports sees a set of six sports games that are aimed at getting gamers off the couch. The sports include Skiing, Soccer, American Football, Boxing: Horse Riding and Hang Gliding. Within each of the individuals disciplines, however, there is a variety of mini-games and challenges. In fact there are more than 40 challenges ranging from Super-G Slalom to taking (and saving) penalty kicks in tense shoot-outs. As this is a Kinect game there is plenty of scope for multi-player as well as single-player action. This means that more than one member of the family or group of friends can jump in and out of the games as the proceed. Scoring points in each challenge soon adds up to the gamer's profile too – and this all builds up and the progress can be tracked by each player. All of this is captured in video highlights (with commentary) by Kinect's camera and can be played back as a Sport Highlights package including that commentary. Videos of gamers in action, as well as their achievements, can also be shared online via Xbox Live. |

Need for Speed: The Run (Xbox 360) $39.99 Another Need for Speed game hitting our screens is an annual event as inevitable as Christmas itself. But in recent years EA has upped the ante with two or even three games per year. This year is no different, with Need for Speed The Run following on from last years spectacular NfS: Hot Pursuit in offering adrenaline pumping arcade racing thrill. This time it's Canadian developer Black Box taking on the development duties using the same Frostbite 2 engine that Battlefield 3 uses. Need for Speed: The Run looks fabulous. And the cars drive superbly too. The premise of the game is simple, you are an outlaw racer, taking part in a Cannonball Run (the Run of the title) style race across the United States - from sea to shining sea. This gives the game an episodic storyline, split into 9 main stages, with each split into shorter races. So none of that circular track racing of other games - this is back to the long distance point-to-point drags that classic Need for Speed games are famous for. Race against a set of opponents all sporting super-exotic cars, and all gunning the throttle for the same $25,000,000 prize, while at the same time avoiding the onslaught of the highway police in cars and choppers. Switch between vehicles to choose the one best suited to the changing road surfaces, and conditions. Take on friends in on-line multiplayer, and even compete with them when they are not online using the Autolog off-line multiplayer feature. NfS: The Run puts you behind the wheel of a massive selection of real-world supercars, in an epic race the likes of which has never been seen in gaming before. |
