Videogames Based On Movies Usually Are Terrible
Videogames are becoming more and more ingrained into our culture. They currently are as profitable or more profitable than the movie industry. Its no surprise then that many movie franchises are developed into videogames. This often results in poor quality. There are a few exceptions, one of the most recent good adaptations is the Back To The Future pc game. What is the reason? How can a fun action packed movie turn into such a dull lackluster game? The answer all lies in the money department. Most videogames that are successful nowadays have huge budgets and require teams and teams of people to complete. When a movie comes out or goes into development, the producers usually are just looking for a way to maximize their profit with a videogame. The game developers put in charge of adapting the movie to the game usually are given very strict timelines to coincide with the movie release. This results in a rush job. In many cases the game may look good, but it won't play good. That is the problem.
I mentioned above the Back To The Future game that was recently released for the pc. That movie is over 20 years old. There have been videogames based on that movie before and they were most likely rushed. This one, however, looks to be made by fans and for fans. So there is a difference. They don't have a strict timeline to coincide with a movie release since it is an old movie. Another example of a game that was released way after the first movie came out was the Die Hard Trilogy on the original playstation. That was deemed by many to be one of the first successful movie to videogame adaptations. So was the Aliens game based on the movie sequel.
The pattern seems to be that movie games are better off being made years after successful movie has found its audience. That way the game makers can focus on the gameplay and many of them may even turn out to be fans of the film itself. It will become more of a labor of love and not so much a rush job. If Telltale Games can do it with Back To The Future, then so can another company with another movie license/franchise.
